How are far-right parties using X to sway voters? 👀 X (formerly Twitter) has changed a lot in the past year. Despite the prevalence of bots and hate speech, many far-right parties across Europe chose to campaign for the EP elections on the platform. In our latest election brief, Digital Democracy researcher Duncan Allen investigates how France’s RN and Germany’s AfD campaigned on X in the leadup to voting day. His report finds: 🛑 The RN was far more active on X in terms of number of posts and more likely to promote their lead candidate Jordan Bardella 🛑 AfD politicians instead reposted English-language meme and conspiracy accounts, and fought with users in the comment sections of posts 🛑 AfD posts were more likely express negative sentiment in their posts, frequently using provocative language like “disgusting” and “illegal” 🛑 Immigration and crime remained dominant topics among both parties despite their differences in strategy Read the full report here: https://bit.ly/3xTub5Y Stiftung Mercator GmbH

Democracy Reporting International is a Berlin-based NGO.
Info
Democracy Reporting International is a not-for-profit organisation based in Berlin, free of any political, religious, partisan, or national affiliation. We are both a think tank, seeking solutions to complex political transitions, and a project partner to national decision makers and citizens who want to drive change in their countries. We focus on key policy areas where the state is accountable to its citizens: constitutions, elections, and parliaments. We work closely with civil society, which has a unique mandate to provide the nexus between the state and organised public interests. We target our analysis and support at key junctures in legislative and political processes, when we can make a difference. Our vision is a world of informed citizens who use their power to elect governments, who are involved in politics, who insist that governments serve their interests, and who act in the defence of open, accountable, and representative democracy - a world of citizens, not subjects.

Making an impact in 86 countries! 💥 With the EU System for an Enabling Environment for Civil Society (EU SEE), we are uniting civil society organisations from 86 countries to monitor and enhance the enabling environment for civil society. Worldwide, freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, and coalition-building face unprecedented restrictions. These pressures arise not just in authoritarian regimes but within established democracies as well. EU SEE stands as a bulwark against these threats, promoting a civic space where voices can be heard and actions can be taken. Our mission: to empower civil society in protecting human rights and democratic principles 🛡️ Learn more about how we'll achieve this: https://bit.ly/3Wg8ZRd Along with DRI, the program is implemented by Hivos in the lead, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, European Partnership for Democracy (EPD), Forus, and Transparency International European Commission

📱 WhatsApp’s communities are a relatively new feature, but they have already played a role in spreading political messages during the EU elections campaign 🇪🇺 🔎 Thanks to Palver, we accessed a sample of 334 #WhatsApp public groups in #Germany to understand online public discourse during the EU vote in this often overlooked channel. Here’s what our researcher Beatriz Saab, the brief's author, found: ➡️ The most recurrent URLs were links to other social media, indicating that these groups serve as complementary distribution channels for social media content. ➡️ There was a strong focus on topics such as security, the role of immigrants in crime, and political narratives surrounding these issues. ➡️ Most messages positioned the #AfD as a solution to many of society’s problems, particularly around safety and national security.
