Some of our experts for thermoelectric materials and systems (Eckhard Müller, Sanyukta Ghosh, amandine duparchy and Pawel Ziolkowski) just came back from the 40th International and 20th European Conference on Thermoelectrics (#ICT/ECT) 2024 in Krakow, Poland, where their presented results regarding the usage of thermoelectric devices in #space, #traffic and the #energy sector were met with great interest by the 450 thermoelectric enthusiasts from around the world. The conference covered a wide range of topics related to thermoelectric materials, devices, measurement systems and their associated applications and challenges. A key highlight was the discussion on material long stability requirements and challenges for practical applications, a topic that was not widely discussed previously. This indicates a significant shift from lab-scale to application-scale research in the field of thermoelectrics. Another noteworthy feature was the assessment of machine learning and artificial intelligence in thermoelectric research, e.g. performance predictions and material/device optimization. The photo shows our colleagues together with collaborators from academia (Byungki Ryu, KERI) and industry (Reinhard Sottong, Ferrotec Europe GmbH) after their respective presentations. How can the integration of computational #thermodynamics, #kinetics and #mechanics guide the development of optimal electrical contacts for thermoelectric generators as energy sustainable devices?🔋🌱 Our colleagues described some cutting-edge advancements in thermoelectric (TE) materials through Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (#ICME) for high energy efficiency in the latest newsletter of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB)! TE materials convert temperature differences directly into electrical power, leveraging the #Seebeck effect. This sustainable technology is ideal for applications where maintenance is challenging, such as #space missions or extreme environments with harsh conditions. Despite their potential, mass production of high-temperature TE generators faces challenges due to material design and the need for stable, non-toxic, and efficient components. Our research focuses on mastering the interconnection zone between TE materials and electrodes to ensure optimal #performance and #durability. 📃 Find out more about the research in this area in the current RUB Newsletter: https://lnkd.in/d-z_AwJq If you have any questions about the article or thermoelectric materials in general, don’t hesitate to contact us!
