Neuer Podcast online! Diesmal mit einem Blick auf das 🇩🇪 Tech-Ökosystem, und wie es in Sachen AI aufschließen kann.
The Top 5 🇺🇸-based Tech companies invest 220bn USD in AI annually. That's 3x more than 🇩🇪 spends on its military. Are the USA running away with AI? The stats are discouraging: Top 10 🇺🇸 companies are on average 57 years old and worth 1.700bn USD. Top 10 🇩🇪 companies are on average 103 years old and worth 105bn USD. 🇪🇺's share of worldwide GDP in 1980: 17% (down from 28% in 1980) 🇺🇸 's share of worldwide GDP in 1980: 26% (also 26% in 1980) 🇨🇳's share of worldwide GDP in 2023: 17% (up from 3% in 1980) I invited Rafael Laguna de la Vera, director of SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen to learn how 🇩🇪 can catch up. He should know, as he heads Germany's answer to Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). My key-takeaway: The German tech ecosystem bleeds money everywhere. You want to advertise? Spend with 🇺🇸 Meta or 🇺🇸 Google. You want to store data? Spend with 🇺🇸 Amazon or 🇺🇸 Microsoft. You need chips? Spend with 🇺🇸 NVIDIA. You need AI compute? Spend with 🇺🇸 OpenAI. And if you sell your startup? VCs will distribute proceeds to 🇺🇸 pensioners. A couple of Rafael's thoughts how to break the cycle: 📝 Invest in an own ecosystem, starting with Chips, Cloud and Compute, where Euros don't leave the system. 📝 Award multi-billion dollar government contracts to 🇪🇺 companies. 📝 Leverage strength in 🇪🇺 open-source technologies to foster innovation. 📝 Invest in deep tech founders to create new industrial verticals in energy, physics and medicine. One of the most interesting discussions I had on the podcast Digitale Optimisten for a while. What do you think - can Europe catch up? 🎧💬
