Our guest speaker, Robert Schiele, who established the Negative Emissions Technologies program at Siemens, discussed the challenges of building a CDR portfolio at a large corporation and gave insights into current market trends. Key takeaways: 🔄 Companies usually look for synergies when investing in CDR (e.g., technology companies may look for partnerships where they can, in turn, provide their technology to the supplier for carbon removal credits). 🇺🇸 The US government is actively engaging in developing countries to build regulatory foundations and secure access to CDR for US companies. Political powerhouses like the EU and China will need to step up their game to avoid being left behind. Today, the Deutscher Verband für negative Emissionen e.V. (DVNE) and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) presented the newest study on Carbon Dioxide Removal. Carbon Atlantis’ Philipp Rothenberger contributed valuable insights on liquid DAC and electrochemical systems. 💡 Key Insights: The global economic potential of the industry is set to close to 1€ trillion annually in 2050. The potential for Germany 🇩🇪 is significant, contributing up to €70 billion to the nation's economy annually, thereby creating over 190,000 jobs 🚀 - more than the entire wind power industry today! ❗Warning: Today's post contains a lot of C’s Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Corey Pattison to our lab in Munich. Corey is Co-Founder and CEO of Cella, a carbon mineralization company providing secure, permanent and scalable Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR). 🪨 Taking our captured CO2, they inject it underground where mineralization turns it into stone. Their innovative technology uses less water than other mineralization approaches. We’re eager to see their pilot deployment in Kenya! 🔒 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝘆𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗢𝟮 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 🔒 We recently visited our storage partner Paebbl in the Netherlands. Steffen, Paul and Joan took a look at the site in the port of Rotterdam where our first-of-a-kind 260 tCO2/year Direct Air Capture (DAC) plant will go live in 2025. Paebbl is the fastest-growing carbon dioxide (CO₂) utilization company in Europe. Their process will turn the CO2 captured by our DAC plant into a solid supplementary, cementitious material (SCM)). This method permanently removes the CO2 from our atmosphere - and creates a valuable building material. 💚⚡ How can we decarbonize the EU electricity grid? This week, our co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer Steffen Garbe attended the Lisbon Energy Summit 2024. 250+ industry leading speakers provided insights on how to drive an affordable, just energy transition that is based on renewables and free of emissions. 💡 The EU aims to be climate-neutral (net zero emissions) by 2050. To achieve this goal, EU emissions (2.7 GtCO2 in 2022) need to be reduced by at least 90% through decarbonisation. The remaining emissions will need to be neutralized through Carbon Dioxide Removals (CDR) to reach net zero. We’re excited to develop a scalable, reliable and affordable Direct Air Capture (DAC) method to address these unavoidable emissions with high quality and durable CDR. 🇸🇬 Singapore x Bavaria 🇩🇪: A delegation from the Lion City visited our lab in Ismaning today. We had the pleasure of welcoming Liong Yuen Ming and Wilson Lin from the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, Singapore at our facilities and showing them our Direct Air Capture technology and 1 tCO2 demonstrator. Singapore is currently building the world’s largest Direct Ocean Capture facility in collaboration with the UCLA and Equatic.tech. They are now looking for promising Direct Air Capture technologies to broaden their negative emissions efforts.
