Amalie, based in Mannheim, Germany, offers crucial support to women in prostitution as part of Die Diakonie im Mannheim. This annual event collects, checks, and sells second-hand handbags to raise funds for this worthy cause. As part of our local volunteering initiatives, our Camelots once again dedicated their time and energy to support the Amalie team. Today, we spotlight Michael Simonis, a dedicated team member at Camelot and a PhD candidate. He shares his journey, challenges, and the unique value his PhD brings to both himself and Camelot: ❓ How did you approach your PhD journey? Michael: Initially, I had no intention of pursuing a PhD after university. However, during my time at Camelot, I recognized the importance of certain topics that required deep, prolonged exploration. With the support of our management, I drafted a proposal and found the perfect academic partners at Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT). ❓ What benefits do you see for yourself and for Camelot? Michael: For me, the advantage lies in gaining specialized knowledge in a specific field, which allows for in-depth research beyond the pragmatic approach of consulting. For Camelot, my research addresses real-world client issues, enhancing our project pitches and solutions. ❓ What are your biggest struggles? Michael: The role transition is undoubtedly challenging. Balancing different languages and separating roles can be tough. Additionally, academic publishing is demanding, requiring substantial effort for relatively small outputs, which I initially underestimated. ❓ Who would you recommend this path to? Michael: This path is for those who are truly passionate about their research topic. It’s essential to fully commit, as it isn’t compatible with a standard 40-hour workweek. Patience and the ability to prioritize are crucial. While Camelot provides great support, one must also be willing to decline some projects to focus on the PhD.
