“A lot of candidates that we interview [...] haven’t actually thought through and strategically planned where they want to go, even as a starting point,” JW Anderson’s HR director Angela Okoro told BoF Careers. “I’m not saying you have to understand your end point, but what’s the start?” “For people who are creative, we need knitwear designers. You need to be able to knit and crochet, the elements that people aren’t [often] so fond of — but we do need it. It’s the same for accessories — you have to build your craft. Don’t be averse to doing an internship at an atelier, don’t be opposed to production — in that sort of work, you learn how to be in a business environment, you learn how to build a network.” “Our head of design [at JW Anderson] started in retail — he went into a brand that he loved and he started to understand what the consumer wanted from that end of the chain. It’s a long game and it’s a strategic game. So, be patient, be flexible, have a bit of a plan. Careers aren’t so linear anymore,” she added. Shiona Turini began her career in PR, before moving to W Magazine as accessories editor. She began styling commercial projects, music videos and red carpet events, working with the likes of Solange and Beyoncé Knowles while consulting with brands and publications such as Dior and Elle. Turini then moved to Los Angeles where her career in costume design flourished, beginning by working on the HBO series Insecure. “I never say no to projects that might scare me. When I was first asked to work in costume design, I'd never done it before and I had to uproot my life, move to LA, get a new team, work in a new city. There were so many reasons that could have made me afraid of that project. But I decided to take the risk and make the leap. It was truly a fantastic decision because it opened up so many different doors to me and I've never stopped learning.” Dive into the article, How I Became… A Costume Designer, to discover Turini’s careers advice now: https://lnkd.in/e-6i8vEy #fashionstylingassistant #costumedesigner #fashionstylist #stylingassistantjobs #costumedesignjobs

Having a strong personal brand, particularly in a creative industry such as fashion, can be a valuable asset. When looking to build a personal brand, be sure to align your online and offline selves. Your social media is a fitting space to express your passions and demonstrate your skills in a genuine, relatable way. Utilising different features on Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest or even LinkedIn can foster a rounded idea of your capabilities and interests, which in turn helps recruiters, colleagues and mentors form a more holistic impression of who you are. Clients can place great value on social media pages that reinforce a compelling personal story. “When the grid or the stories look almost perfect or ‘done’, it just feels a bit too cold, like a portfolio — and that’s not what you want to see,” says Massimiliano Di Battista, co-founder and chief executive of creative talent agency MA+ Group. “[Post] moodboards or a [source of] inspiration, or [that] you went to see an exhibition. It’s all elements to showcase your personality, your interests and your taste.” Read the full article, How to Build Your Personal Brand, on BoF now. #personalbrand #fashioncareer #careerdevelopment #fashionjobs #fashioncareers #fashioncommunications #fashionmarketing

Rosh Mahtani landed her first job as a visual merchandiser for accessories at the now-shuttered online retailer Avenue 32. While there, she took a wax carving course in London's jewellers' hub Hatton Gardens, fashioning landscapes and demonic creatures inspired by the 13th century Italian poet Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy. It was a medium that "felt, for the first time ever, like it made sense to me," laying the foundations for her designs and brand today. Remaining curious in your job, no matter the level of seniority, can demonstrate your willingness to grow in the role, as well as your desire to foster positive working relationships. “Ask questions in the workplace. Quite often, we are so focused on being interesting and we forget to be interested,” said BoF’s Sophie Soar. “People remember not really what you said but how you made them feel. If you show you care about what it is people are saying and engage with it, that can be incredibly valuable.” Discover actionable career advice from Daniel Peters, founder of Fashion Minority Report, a learning and career development platform geared towards underrepresented talent in the fashion and creative sectors, Mark Eley, programme director at JCA and co-founder of brand Eley Kishimoto, and BoF’s Sophie Soar, commercial features editor and host of the LinkedIn Live series Building a Career in Fashion.
