February 13-23, 2025. One of the world's largest public film festivals & a crucial film industry forum.

Info

The Berlinale is a unique place of artistic exploration and entertainment. It is one of the largest public film festivals in the world, attracting tens of thousands of visitors from around the globe each year. For the film industry and the media, the eleven days in February are also one of the most important events in the annual calendar and an indispensable trading forum. The Berlin International Film Festival enjoys an eventful history. The festival was created for the Berlin public in 1951, at the beginning of the Cold War, as a “showcase of the free world”. Shaped by the turbulent post-war period and the unique situation of a divided city, the Berlinale has developed into a place of intercultural exchange and a platform for the critical cinematic exploration of social issues. To this day it is considered the most political of all the major film festivals. The Berlinale brings the big stars of international cinema to Berlin and discovers new talents. It accompanies filmmakers of all disciplines on their paths into the spotlight and supports careers, projects, dreams, and visions. Thanks to its numerous industry initiatives, the Berlinale is a significant driver of innovation and an important economic factor internationally as well as for companies in Germany and Berlin. Great news for emerging and innovative filmmakers from around the world! The Berlinale is thrilled to announce a new section - Perspectives. This new international competition for feature-length fiction debuts will shine a brighter spotlight on new filmmakers within the festival. It will offer a visible platform for features representing a genuinely international range of voices which have a bold and fluent cinematic language and offer arresting perspectives and new ways of seeing the world. As a new stand-alone competition, Perspectives will include up to 14 fiction debuts from all over the world, with a jury of three deciding on the Best First Feature Award. The award is once again funded by GWFF (Gesellschaft zur Wahrnehmung von Film- und Fernsehrechten) and endowed with 50,000 euros. We are excited to keep supporting up-and-coming filmmakers and the various festival sections will, of course, also continue to present feature film debuts. Please welcome the newest members of the Berlinale executive team! Berlinale Director Tricia Tuttle has appointed several new and exciting executive director positions to help her shape the festival: The executive team includes Panorama section head Michael Stütz and the former US-delegate to the Berlinale Jacqueline Lyanga. The two internationally respected programmers will share responsibilities as Co-Directors of Film Programming. Joining the team as the festival's first Chief of Staff is experienced Berlinale colleague Florian Weghorn who is currently the co-head of Berlinale Talents. Expert in corporate finance in the cultural sector, Tommy Kommer, becomes Director of Finance and Business Operations. Welcome Tommy! And finally: Miriam Reimers, who has been part of the festival’s management team for five years, is joining the executive team as Director of Programme Operations and Production. They join previously announced Director of Berlinale Pro*, Tanja Meissner. Tricia Tuttle: “It’s wonderful to have most of my executive team in place now. I am so excited about working with them to support the Berlinale staff, but also planning for the future. One of my major objectives is to revitalise the ways in which Berlinale connects to a sense of place, to take advantage of our incredible home city. If we can do this while also building stronger links between the public film programme and the European Film Market and the marketplace, we can make the festival even more impactful for audiences and also the important films, filmmakers and rights holders who trust us with their premieres." We welcome all members – new and old faces – to the team and are thrilled to see what they have in store for the festival's future! 🎬🍀🎥 For the full press release head to: https://bit.ly/3KS51aW #Berlinale #Berlinale2024 #FilmFestival #FilmIndustry
