Starting June 27, Germany's new citizenship law will allow immigrants to become citizens in as little as three years. Here’s what you need to know about this significant reform: Key Highlights of Germany’s New Citizenship Law: - Naturalization in 3 Years: The residency requirement for naturalization has been reduced from eight years to five years, and it can be further reduced to three years for those with special achievements in integration. - Multiple Citizenship: Germany will now allow multiple citizenships as a standard practice, so you no longer need to relinquish your previous nationality. - Children Born in Germany: Children born in Germany to foreign parents will automatically receive German citizenship if at least one parent has been legally residing in Germany for over five years with permanent residency. - Guest Worker Generation: The reform acknowledges the contributions of Turkish workers who moved to Germany in the 1960s. These individuals can now gain citizenship without a naturalization test, provided they demonstrate oral language skills. - Commitment to Democratic Values: Applicants must commit to Germany’s democratic principles and reject antisemitism, racism, or inhumane acts. The naturalization test will include questions to reflect this commitment. This reform is a big step forward in recognizing the contributions of immigrants and promoting integration within German society.
