For decades, Germany has had the challenge that venture capital as an asset class is only weakly developed, not only in contrast to the USA, but also other economies such as the UK or France. It is particularly difficult to raise capital for follow-on rounds. Entrepreneurs such as Jörg Lamprecht from Dedrone for instance solved the problem by keeping research and development in Germany, moving their headquarters and sales to the USA and being mainly financed by US investors. He recently sold his company to the US company Axon, known as the inventor of the Taser. Can the model also be applied to German AI start-ups? Hamburg entrepreneurs Petra Vorsteher and Ragnar Kruse are convinced that it can. For years - even before the boom in generative AI through OpenAI - the couple have been involved in supporting AI founders following the successful sale of their advertising network start-up Smaato (Now part of Verve). Their organization AI.HAMBURG was the nucleus for the AI.STARTUP.HUB Hamburg, which includes five other partners - Hamburg Innovation GmbH, Aric, The Machine Learning in Engineering Initiative , Exponential Innovation Institute and Start2 Group - and there are now three other AI hubs in addition to Hamburg, in Munich, Darmstadt and Berlin, which are funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. Kruse and Vorsteher have also set up their own venture fund, the AI.FUND, together with partners, which is set to comprise 100 million dollars. For WirtschaftsWoche, I observed the two of them on a recent trip to Silicon Valley, where ten German AI start-ups presented themselves to investors, including dealcode AI and dpv Analytics from Hamburg. What distinguishes the German AI founders from some AI entrepreneurs in the USA - they already have significant sales and are asking for comparatively little capital for their international expansion. Kruse is convinced that the model will work. The great role model is SAP, which achieved its international breakthrough by expanding into the USA and is now the most valuable German company. 🌍 „Wir haben in Europa mehr KI-Talent als in ganz Nordamerika“ In der neuesten Ausgabe der WirtschaftsWoche haben unsere erfolgreichen Tech-Unternehmer Petra Vorsteher und Ragnar Kruse – frisch zurück von ihrer USA-Reise – mit der Redaktion über ihre Erfolgsgeschichte und ihre langjährigen Aktivitäten im Bereich deutsch-amerikanische Wirtschaftsbeziehungen gesprochen. Dafür und für ihr Lebenswerk wurden sie in San Francisco gerade erst mit dem GABA Northern California - German American Business Association Award of Excellence ausgezeichnet. Im Gespräch mit der WirtschaftsWoche ging es natürlich auch um die Rolle und Möglichkeiten von KI, spannende und erfolgsversprechende KI-Startups aus Deutschland, darunter dealcode AI oder dpv-analytics GmbH, die hiesige Investitionslage und warum jetzt der Zeitpunkt für Unternehmen ist, in KI zu investieren. 🚀 Auch wenn Deutschland nach Ansicht der beiden mehr KI-Talent als Nordamerika hat, gibt es von ihnen auch warnende Töne. Laut Ragnar Kruse habe Deutschland schon bei der Internetrevolution weitestgehend verloren. Bei KI müsse man vermeiden, dass die Kommerzialisierung wieder an Deutschland und Europa vorbeigehe. „Wir müssen etwas für die nächste Generation tun, um den Wohlstand zu erhalten.“ 💡 Doch Petra Vorsteher und Ragnar Kruse geht es vor allem darum, technologisches Wissen in Deutschland zu halten, auch mithilfe von US-Kapital. „Wir haben so viele KI-Talente in Deutschland, es wäre tragisch, wenn wir auch noch bei KI verlieren. Und: „Wir sind überzeugt, in den nächsten sechs Jahren im Bereich KI einen Nachfolger von SAP zu sehen.“ 🌟 Das Fazit der beiden Unternehmer: Deutsche KI-Startups, deren Geschäftsmodell erste Erfolge zeigen, sollten in die USA kommen. Möglichst nicht übersiedeln, aber um Partner und Kapital zu finden, um in dem größten Softwaremarkt der Welt zu expandieren. Mit dem in den USA verdienten Geld könnten dann Forschung und Entwicklung in Deutschland finanziert werden. 👏 Die beiden Serienunternehmer Vorsteher und Kruse sind überzeugt: Wir leben in einer der spannendsten Zeiten der Menschheitsgeschichte. Für deutsche Investoren sei jetzt der richtige Zeitpunkt, in KI zu investieren.
