New publication: Agora Verkehrswende and the International Power-to-X Hub provide an overview of the current state of research with a view to the defossilisation of the #aviation sector using electricity-based sustainable aviation fuels (#eSAF). Free download: https://lnkd.in/dQ38XaWB Key takeaways: ✈ The current system of fossil fuels is not a viable option for the future, and SAF will be indispensable for advancing climate protection in aviation. ✈ Policymakers across the globe should facilitate a market ramp-up of e-SAF by adopting suitable political and regulatory frameworks. ✈ The development of comprehensive sustainability criteria for e-SAF – and not just for hydrogen – is essential for their socially and environmentally sound production and use. ✈ Once the political frameworks for e-SAF are in place, it will fall to industry and investors to rapidly expand the supply of e-SAF. ✈ A sole focus on “sweet spot” regions that offer particularly beneficial conditions for e-SAF production is insufficient; rather, an overarching strategy that addresses all major dimensions of e-SAF production is needed. Trotz wachsendem Pkw-Bestand ist der Autoverkehr in den letzten Jahren gesunken. Das zeigt eine aktuelle Analyse, für die wir mit KCW GmbH umfangreiche Datenreihen zur Entwicklung des Personenverkehrs von 2019-2024 ausgewertet haben. 🚗 Auf Autobahnen und in vielen Städten waren 2023 über 6% weniger Autos unterwegs als noch 2019. 🚝 Die Fahrleistung im öffentlichen Verkehr nahm insgesamt zu, auch wenn die Anzahl der Fahrgäste noch nicht das Vor-Corona-Niveau erreicht hat. Die Veränderungen lassen sich vor allem auf drei Faktoren zurückführen: die Einführung von Homeoffice-Regelungen 🏡 in vielen Betrieben, die Einführung des Deutschlandtickets 🎫 und vermutlich auch auf den Anstieg der CO2-Bepreisung bei fossilen Kraftstoffen ⛽. Schlussfolgerung von Wiebke Zimmer, stellvertretende Direktorin Agora Verkehrswende: "Verkehrswachstum ist kein Naturgesetz. Rapid growth in sales figures can be expected in the segment of large battery-electric semi-trailer tractors, said Urs Maier (Agora Verkehrswende) in an interview with Reuters News Agency / Riham Alkousaa. Although large electric trucks still cost more than twice as much as diesel-powered equivalents, the total cost per km is, in many use cases, already lower. Now available in english: Our recent study "The transport transformation as value added" estimates the economic costs and investment requirements of transforming the transport sector in Germany up to 2045. The conclusion: Full-scale climate neutrality in the transport sector can be achieved by 2045 without additional costs or mobility losses – but only if the German government acts without delay. Delayed action will lead to higher expenditures or higher emissions. The study considers three scenarios: The reference scenario is based on impact assessments published by the German government, and presumes the continuation of current policy. In two target scenarios, more ambitious policy is pursued: starting rapidly with effect from 2025 and beginning delayed in 2030. If robust policy action is delayed to 2030, achieving the same level of emissions savings will entail additional costs of some 500 billion euros (+5 per cent). In the reference scenario, Germany fails to meet its climate targets in transport, and produces 590 million tonnes of additional CO2 emissions. "Political hesitation has a price – and this price is measured either in money or emissions. Yet the issue is not merely an economic one. The fate of the biosphere is at stake, and we have an obligation to act under the German constitution and international law", says Wiebke Zimmer, Deputy Executive Director of Agora Verkehrswende. Im Juni 2024 wurden pro Tag 1.477 E-Autos in Deutschland neu zugelassen – mehr als bisher in diesem Jahr, aber deutlich weniger als im Vorjahresmonat und weit entfernt vom politischen Ziel: Für 15 Mio. E-Autos bis 2030 müssten es 5.500 pro Tag sein. Auch bei angespannter Haushaltslage lässt sich #Elektromobilität fördern: Höhere Steuereinnahmen (Kfz- und Dienstwagenbesteuerung) bei Neufahrzeugen mit hohen Emissionen können Kaufzuschüsse für effiziente E-Autos finanzieren. 🚍 In München fährt alle 54 Sekunden ein Bus oder eine Bahn. 🚇 Dass das in Deutschland nicht die Regel ist, zeigt der ÖV-Atlas von Agora Verkehrswende: Er gibt einen Überblick über den öffentlichen Verkehr und zeigt, wie oft und in welchem Takt Busse und Bahnen fahren. „Wir sind der Ansicht, dass es ein garantiertes Grundangebot mit öffentlichem Verkehr überall in Deutschland geben sollte, ganz egal wo man wohnt“, sagt Philipp Kosok, Projektleiter Öffentlicher Verkehr bei Agora Verkehrswende.
