Mandate of the DPO

Each institution has one or more DPOs to ensure the application of the principles of personal data protection in the institution.

The mandate of the Data Protection Officer (DPO) is to ensure that controllers respect their data protection obligations and data subjects are informed of their rights and obligations pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2018/1725.

The DPO ensures in an independent manner the internal application of the provisions of the Regulation (EU) 2018/1725 and keeps a public register of the processing operations carried out by the Commission.

The Commission has appointed a Data Protection Coordinator (DPC) in each directorate-general (DG). This has been justified by the size of the institution and the necessity to have relays in the different DGs. There is also a specific DPO for the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF).
