Science writer, WordPress programmer and much more

Based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, I am a science writer by profession (here’s some sample work in english, in case you want to hire me), but much more than that. So, here’s a quick rundown:

  • I studied technical computer science at Delft University of Technology, graduating (in 1992) on the application of neural networks to predictive maintenance of machines. I did the research at the (then) Czecho-Slovak Academy of Science in Prague, which allowed me to take in the immediate post-communist era in that country.
  • While studying I started to work at the excellent university newspaper Delta. This meant that by the time I graduated in computer science my journalism skills were also at the national level.
  • I became a freelance journalist on science and technology for national newspapers and magazines to pay for my PhD in the philosophy of computer science. That degree I received in 1996. I then turned to journalism fulltime.
  • At around the same time I became involved in literature, publishing several short stories. In 2002 I became the founder and chairman of Rotown Magic, a foundation that organises literary events in my home town. My first novel, ‘Magda is overal’ (Magda is everywhere) was published in 2018 and got some really good reviews.
  • During my student days I also became active in the Dutch Green Party, holding several volunteer positions on the local and national level. Amongst others I headed the committee that vets candidates for party chairman.
  • In my spare time I like travelling, preferably overland. My longest trip sent me some 25.000 kilometres by train, bus and boat from Rotterdam to the Indonesian town of Tomohon, where I grew up.
  • I built my first website in 2000. It was hardcoded html at the time. A few years later I switched to WordPress. After some requests from friends to build them sites my theme developed into a framework. This made me aware of the need for speed, out of which the Theme & Plugin Profiler plugin grew. You can also find me at WPSE.
