Your experiment is reminiscent of an demo of fractal formation between two electrodes with zinc and tin solutions. Distance does not appear in this case. You missed my point. Did you just let the a new nickel electrode sit in KOH for a day? No current should be passed during this test and no electrical connections should be made! This is the control experiment I am talking about. Does that become black?

There can be many causes. Nickel and steel are not inert to strongly alkaline solutions. Have you done control experiments? Just soak the a new electrode in 6 M KOH for a day and do not pass current. What happens? Does it remain intact or becomes black? You have to study the metal properties esp. from descriptive inorganic chemistry books, especially base corrosion of given metals, before conducting fancy electrochemical experiments.

@Jermyyyy, No your original procedure is problematic. The organic material from kale extract should be destroyed by oxidation before titration. The pH has to be adjusted and Eriochrome B T must be prepared accordingly. Talk to your teacher about it.

Equivalent concept pre-dates moles etc. Equivalent and gram-equivalent have had a very specific meaning in chemical analysis-long before electron or mole were known.

EvanWilliams, Where do you see that oxidation can occur without reduction? It must occur simultaneously. The processes do not have to be localized. That is the basis of battery. If redox process had to occur at the same location, there will be no battery on Earth.

You can not only mentally but physically separate redox processes. However redox process must occur simultaneously, but there is no restriction which says that they must occur at the same spot or in the same beaker. Search salt bridge concept.
