Mar 31, 2020 at 16:44 comment added MSalters Benzene has an odor threshold similar to that of toluene, but toluene is present in higher concentrations in gasoline as it's less toxic. So between the two you already expect benzene to be less important, and that's ignoring all the other aromatics that matt black notes.
Sep 3, 2019 at 10:48 comment added matt_black @Rafael I disagree. If you want to demonstrate I'm wrong you will need to find far better sources of evidence than the one you seem attached to which shows no sources to justify the idea that benzene is uniquely pungent compared to the other aromatics present in gasoline in much larger concentrations.
Sep 2, 2019 at 22:38 comment added Rafael @matt_black, I agree that other aromatics are pungent; However gasoline's distinct odor is from benzene.
Sep 2, 2019 at 22:26 comment added matt_black @Rafael having worked with benzene, toluene, xylene and a wide variety of other compounds, I disagree. Not least because the higher volume aromatics are also pungent.
Sep 2, 2019 at 22:19 comment added Rafael @matt_black, if it makes you happy, benzene is responsible for the main odor of gasoline. Benzene is extremely pungent, and sticks out from among the other compounds. If you ever smell benzene (and you probably shouldn't) you'll notice its odor smells distinctly like gasoline. I'm not editing my answer to reflect this, because it should be pretty self-evident that that was my intent.
Sep 2, 2019 at 15:25 comment added matt_black Since gasoline has hundreds of components, assigning the smell to one doesn't sound like a high quality answer.
