1$\begingroup$ Another similar question is : why does a strange compound like $\ce{Fe3O4}$ exist ? Why is Iron (plus one or two other metals) able to make an oxide containing the same element at two different oxidation states ? Why is it not the case for other metals like copper for example ? $\endgroup$– MauriceCommented Oct 15, 2023 at 17:07

2$\begingroup$ An idea : did you compute the Gibbs enthalpy for either one of the two reactions? $\endgroup$– ButtonwoodCommented Oct 15, 2023 at 17:44

$\begingroup$ @NilayGhosh It seems to me neither of linked answers addresses the reason why Fe2O3 is not formed. $\endgroup$– PoutnikCommented Oct 16, 2023 at 3:07

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. organic-chemistry), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
