    $\begingroup$ @ron: Thanks for pointing this out. I do get the connection between ORD and CD via the Kramers-Kronig relations. I think my question is different (and easier) than that one. $\endgroup$

    $\begingroup$ +1 only for "it quickly gets complicated" Yep. That's for sure. Most times I attempt to get a deeper understanding of optics, I end up nose down into a QM book, which invariably ends up with me getting into a deeper state of confusion. $\endgroup$
