@Politank-Z Well, the closure as a duplicate depends on a certain interpretation of the question, which in turn hinges on the interpretation of the word desolation. I have an answer ready that shows that that interpretation is not necessarily the correct one.
It's in the same direction as the current answer, but takes it a bit further and adds quotes to support it.
@SQB Isn't that covered by the answers in the other question?

Not at all. The other question is more a question of timing of story-telling.
Its answers are along those lines as well. Which is correct for that question.
The closed question is "the film is called The Desolation of Smaug, why don't I see Smaug's desolation?" and my answer boils down to "you do see the desolation of Smaug, but you're interpreting desolation incorrectly".
While the dupe target is "why does the third film start with the death of Smaug, instead of having the second film end with it?", which the answers address.
