Please meet Sam Fader, intern at Güdel Inc. USA. She just completed her Freshman year in college, studying computer science and considering adding engineering as a second major. Her role at Güdel is Jr. Assembler, interning for the summer. Sam grew up intrigued by computers and coding, but also loves building things with her hands. She has been a member of robotics teams since 4th grade and was captain of her high school team. While working for Güdel, Sam has been helping build machines, including floor and overhead rail transfer units (RTUs). When asked about learning assembly skills and studying engineering, Sam said, "I like having the knowledge of and experience with both. It allows me to understand the building process from the ground up and to know what is doable. Sometimes engineering drawings just don't quite match real world applications,” she said laughing. Sam enjoys the learning environment at Güdel. Her co-workers were instantly welcoming and have proven helpful whenever she encounters a new task or situation. She also appreciates that the learning is done by both shadowing mentors and hands-on learning versus just following written instructions. The exposure to new career opportunities, including jobs she was previously not aware of, has been an additional benefit to her internship experience. Being a woman in a male-dominated work environment, Sam has been pleasantly surprised by how supportive her co-workers have been. Although she had been warned by friends and family that a shop environment can be a tough place for a woman to work, her reality has been quite the opposite. In the past, Sam’s experience on robotics teams had shown some of the difficulties that are still prevalent in the workplace; however, she found that “ignoring them and doing your own thing… and doing so better than them” provided the best solution. Fortunately, that has not been necessary at Güdel. She highly recommends the internship experience here and has some advice for those students or graduates looking to participate. First and foremost, “choose Güdel.” We didn’t pay her to say that by the way! Explaining her top piece of advice, Sam said, “People here take the time to explain things and are very open with their advice regarding a future in the automation field.” She also suggests interns take advantage of every opportunity to explore various jobs at Güdel. “Expose yourself to every job you can – you never know what might strike a chord. You may not have even known particular jobs were an option!” What does the future hold? Sam will continue college pursuing her studies, and would like to spend summers and time available during the school year working for Güdel. She’d like to try her hand at engineering and would love to spend some time in the field servicing equipment, traveling and seeing the equipment out in the wild that she helped build with her own hands. #Gudel #industrialautomation #internship #automation
