Rockstar…. Forcing your devs to come back to the office??? Listen guys and gals. I know GTA is a fun and good series. But we as devs, indie owners, juniors. Dont buy Rockstars bullshit. Im boycotting it right off the bat and will never be buying another title from Rockstar. The way they treat their devs is absurd. Working them like theyre in a fuckin sweatshop snd outsourcing devs paying them pennies on the dollar. A game that has been in development since 2014… boycott it If anyone has wanted to see rockstar finally fall, this is that monent. Spread the word and boycott this game. Most of these current devs are going to be laid off anyway… but by boycotting this project specifically, rockstar will NOT recover from their losses. Hit em where it hurts. Buy indie, play indie, we are the ones with the power!

Friends, many of you know that in addition to my passion for games, I am an avid game collector, amassing over 2,000 items stored both at my parents' home and mine. Occasionally, as a token of appreciation for our community's contributions, fellow members and game manufacturers generously gift me items for my collection, as they know I never accept money. Still, our community operates on a strictly zero-profit basis, and I have always neutralized every penny of gifts by making equivalent contributions to charity. However, our family already commits substantial funds annually to causes primarily focused on essential human needs such as food and healthcare, details of which we prefer to keep private. Thus, moving forward and with Jess' agreement, I've decided to adjust our approach regarding just these game gifts from the community. I figured a gift from gamers should return to our community as a gift to gamers. Each gift I receive from a company or community member will now lead to an offsetting contribution to a special gamer ticket fund. This fund will be used exclusively to send as many of our members as possible to next year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC). This initiative was, by far, our most popular cost-bearing community activity over the last year, and I am committed to maximizing participation in 2025. For instance, First 4 Figures has kindly offered to send me a Sheikah Slate statue in recognition of our community's efforts. In response, I am setting aside $400 from my own pocket for GDC tickets next year, enabling two community members to attend. Upon receiving the statue, I will present a review of it and further discuss this new initiative. Last year, we facilitated 220 tickets for GDC, and I challenge our community to surpass that number in 2025. If you are interested in contributing to our GDC ticket fund, there’s no need for immediate donations. Simply express your interest, and I will add you to our list. Each expo pass costs $200. You can do this using our Ticket To Ride Form (Resource 14) from now through next March and make a pledge at: https://lnkd.in/dynRXCV9 I will keep adding money to the fund whenever a thoughtful community gift is received. Hello, my dearest network! I hope fate treats you well during these stormy days😉 While the industry rattled by shake-ups - GTA V surpassed the 200 million mark, while Red Dead Redemption II made it past 64 million copies sold. As we think about their successes, what really made these games reach such incredible heights? While GTA Online undeniably plays a significant role in revenue streams, it's crucial to recognize that its foundation rests on the bedrock of perfectly well-crafted single-player experiences. GTA V hooked players with its massive open world and gripping story. Similarly, Red Dead Redemption II drew in audiences worldwide with its immersive narrative and detailed world. So, what's the secret sauce behind their success? It's the unwavering commitment to quality, attention to detail, and immersive gameplay experiences. These games weren't just products, they were immersive worlds waiting to be explored, crafted with care and precision. Where I'm heading with this is that it seems like the current industry has shifted towards prioritizing "making product first" over "game first", despite the success story of GTA proving that the opposite approach is actually what works. Of course, I'm not saying this applies to everyone. But I bet some examples have come to your mind😉 Well, here I go kvetching again 😬 😂

Another week, another round of layoffs, another studio closure, and another blow to the Vancouver game dev scene. Game development in Vancouver has been on life support for the past few years, and what a shocking fall from grace in comparison to how things looked in the early to mid-2000s where you couldn't throw a BC roll (sushi reference) without hitting a triple-A studio! You can blame more favourable tax credits in other Canadian provinces (which doesn't help!) but that's not the real reason for the decay, is it? We're not really competing against other provinces within our country, we're competing with a global talent market and a shift to remote work that has driven game development to lower cost regions that can produce stuff that's just as good as anything we can make. It's a shock and a wake-up call, perhaps too late. Everyone is on survival mode right now and there are still rough waters ahead. Today doesn't seem to be the day for big-picture industry analysis, but when the dust settles and the pain of layoffs is not so fresh for people, it'll be time to sit down and ask ourselves some tough questions about how we got here. I'm getting tired of saying it, but my heart goes out to all those affected by the current round of layoffs and closures. 💔

Complaining won't get you hired. Sending hundreds of applications without a reply sucks, I get it. And job hunting in game development is tough in 2024. But hear me out: No one hires out of pity. People hire because you show value. Instead of complaining about the market, focus on creating value for others: • Share common best practices • Contribute to professional topics • Create useful solutions or courses • Make a tutorial on a complex issue Or go a step further: prepare a list of recommendations for the company you want to join and send it with your CV (and also share it publicly). How so, you might ask? Do something for others for FREE? Yes, absolutely. It's called "content marketing." You create value upfront, become more recognizable, and gain a reputation. And then you get hired easily because you provided value upfront. If you're willing to spend hundreds of hours on interviews, spend some time creating value for others. It'll pay off in the long run.

I've gone back and forth of posting and what to post this pride. I keep deleting everything and just deciding to instead back away, be silent and watch. Watching those who are considered leaders and voices in the gaming industry love and react to vile and harmful ideas or even posting them themselves. Watching as these same people get supported by so many people make me really question the industry as a whole. Watching the hate and attacking others grow and grow. But it's not just these people, it's also watching the companies that they work for post things for pride while celebrating diversity and inclusion but then do and say nothing when these employees go after the LGBTQ+ community, women, and minority groups in the vile things that they say. It's definitely not a good look when the gaming industry continues to turn a blind eye to these actions. How can change come when so many leaders and managers support these harmful and hurtful ideas? How are minority groups, women, and LGBTQ+ groups suppose to feel safe when they see this? Are you willing to keep staying silent or speak out for this horrible behavior?

Develop isn't over for most people. But sadly it is for me. Gabriele Sanfilippo and I attended on Tuesday and Wednesday morning to chat shop with people interested in hearing about life at Spliced Inc. and Anchor Point Studios. Develop never disappoints. And as always>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Familiar Faces ✅ Worthwhile conversations ✅ Effervescent energy at the hotel bar ✅ More beards than the year before, and the year before that ✅ People sporting a different hat every day of the event? ✅ Several meaningful introductions made that we'll keep in touch with? ✅ But more than all this - whilst a lot of studios and publishers will measure ROI by looking at the cost of attending the event and seeing the data off the back of it (as important as this is) - let's not undervalue>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The energy we take from it, and bring back with us 🔋 The connections we make that remind us of the industry we love so much 🤝 The subsequent uplift in focus, happiness and positive attitude it brings to all of us 🌞 What a great reminder of the best industry on the planet! 🌍

Hello Friends, Help.  I would sincerely appreciate any help—share this with your network, comment and react to increase reach, and pass my resume along to any hiring managers you know looking for a Producer at any level between "Producer" through Senior, Lead, EP, or Production Director, as well as anyone looking for a Senior or leadership-level Customer Support manager. My resume is on my profile. Please have a look at my (or leave a new one!) LinkedIn Recommendations.  I have encouraged many people over the past year to make this kind of post, and it seems it is my turn. Having urged others to post something like this, I understand why it needs to be made. Now that it is my turn, I find it difficult. Heartbreakingly, mind-bendingly hard.  I was laid off on January 18th, 2023. The severance package is gone, the emergency fund is gone, and a nest egg I'd been saving for retirement but could dip into in case of emergency is almost gone. Very soon, I will have to choose between losing the house or cashing out my 401 (k) and losing everything I had set aside for retirement.  I need a job. I have experience leading Customer Service teams as large as 1600 or so folks, doing project planning/production work with cross-functional teams as small as ten and as large as several hundred. I have a demonstrated capability to perform above expectations in people management and individual contributor roles. I'd love to stay in Baltimore if you have a remote role available or if you will let me work hybrid, even if it is two months onsite and two weeks back here. I will also relocate if needed. I'd hoped to stay where I am for at least another year and a half to two years so the teenagers could find their way out of the house. If there is no house, that's a more significant issue, so moving is now on the table.   A quick search of my Gmail shows just over 800 "We've received your application" emails during that period. I stopped tracking applications in December of 2023. The mental health impact was too significant to keep monitoring the data, and my system for searching and applying for roles was a solid process by that point. I've had some great interviews over the past year—shoutouts to the team at Raven, Zwift, Blizzard's Overwatch team, and Epic. I've also had some interviews that were not so great.  Wallace T.
