On July 7th, the BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) asked the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to declare the proposed strike action by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Ship and Dock Foremen Local 514 (ILWU Local 514) as contrary to the Canada Labour Code. The ILWU Local 514 had planned to strike on July 8th against employer DP World Canada, but the CIRB declared the strike vote illegal and directed the union to retract its notice. The BCMEA rescinded its lockout notice in response to the CIRB decision. Attention from Universal Logistics Inc. On Saturday, June 29th, the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference revealed that unionized workers from Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Southern have voted overwhelmingly in favor of striking if they do not secure a new labor deal. The vote by over 9,200 Canadian railroad workers does not mean that a strike will happen soon but shows that the union is ready to stop working unless a new contract is negotiated to replace the old one that expired on December 31, 2023. This is the second strike authorization this year. An earlier vote on May 1st set the stage for a potential strike on May 22nd, but this was avoided because Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Labour, intervened. The Canada Industrial Relations Board is currently looking into the possible health and safety impact of a work stoppage. It is unlikely that a legal strike or lockout will happen before mid-July, and Canadian law requires a new vote since the previous strike authorization expired on June 30th. This gives the union another 60 days to legally strike, with a work stoppage possible 72 hours after a government decision. Quick Tip #56: How driving limits for truck drivers impact transit times The following driving limits, imposed by the U.S. and Canada for safety reasons, could impact your transit times: Canada – 13 hours driving within a day or 14 hours of on-duty time within a day. Drivers are required to take at least 10 hours off-duty time within a day. Two hours of the total 10 hours can be taken throughout the day, in blocks of no less than 30 minutes. U.S.A – Drive a maximum of 11 hours in a consecutive on-duty window of 14 hours, with a 30-minute break at some point in the trip. Thereafter, drivers must be off duty for 10 consecutive hours. They are also not allowed to work more than 70 hours in eight days.

Quick Tip #31: Act quickly to resolve non-compliance issues and avoid increasing fines Most monetary penalties issued by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) under the Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS) escalate with repetition. If a problem is not corrected, you can be repeatedly fined an escalating amount for the same infraction.

Quick Tip #22: Put delivery and handling instructions in more than one place Increase your chances of completing a successful delivery of a package by putting handling and delivery instructions on at least three of the surfaces. This simple step will not only lead to fewer stray deliveries, but also help avoid the damage caused when a package is only marked in one place and it has to be flipped to find the labelling.

🚨 Alert from Universal Logistics Inc. 🚨 Important update from the Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association (CIFFA) as of June 20th, 2024: 🚆 Union Voting on Extending Strike Threat by CN and CPKC Rail Workers The union representing over 9,000 CN and CPKC workers has organized a second strike vote amid stalled contract negotiations. 🗣️ "We must protect our rights regardless of the outcome," said the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC). Earlier, CN and CPKC workers had voted to authorize a strike that could have started on May 22. 📅 Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan referred the dispute to the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) on May 13, pausing any potential work stoppage until a decision on the strike's impact on national safety is made. 🗳️ TCRC's second strike vote began on Friday and will end on June 29, with the current strike mandate expiring on June 30. According to Canadian labour laws, a strike can only be declared if approved within the last 60 days. 💡 QUICK TIP #2: Two ways to control the cost of your freight shipments 💡 Looking for new ways to reduce your shipping costs? Start by ensuring you are not wasting money by carrying weight that can be removed. Then make sure your shipping cartons are not bigger than they need to be. Look for every possible saving, but never do anything that weakens the carton to the point where it could no longer carry your goods safely. That would be a penny-wise, pound-foolish mistake. 👉 For more Quick Tips and to stay updated, register for our newsletter: https://lnkd.in/g2GzZjMp
