Real time shipborne weather data

About us

To enable the efficient exchange of weather observations, OceanSync has developed a ship-based automated weather station. Weather data, like wind, pressure, temperature and humidity, are transmitted in real time from any location on earth. The AWS is currently deployed collecting data on a growing network of cooperative and collaborative vessels of all sizes. While the observations from a single vessel are valuable, the aggregated observations from multiple vessels will provide game-changing insights into weather patterns and our climate.

Anyone watching the practice races for SailGP this afternoon witnessed firsthand how quickly conditions can change. Our sensors stationed in Bedford Basin and Dartmouth Cove captured the moments a light sea breeze flipped into stiff offshores in a matter of minutes, making the difference between dead in the water and flying on the foils. We believe this data has applications that extend beyond sail racing, helping commercial shippers and the general public improve situational awareness while on the water. Our network of weather stations are integrated into Windy.app in real-time, to keep you up-to-date on the latest conditions around the course this weekend. Here's to some more high-speed sailing action!

Canada’s Ocean Supercluster announces $2.2m project to optimize maritime supply chain operations and reduce emissions 🔗🌊 Today, Canada’s Ocean Supercluster announced the Optimizing Maritime Supply Chain Operations Project to establish real-time carbon emissions monitoring and mitigation tools, integrated with advanced data analytics and tracking systems to align with sustainability goals. The project will enhance maritime supply chain efficiency, sustainability, and security, aligning with environmental goals by monitoring and reducing emissions. Led by OceanSync Inc. in Halifax, NS, a key innovation of the new OSC project is the development of a Modal Optimization Tool (MOT) to create a resilient cargo distribution network which considers the CO2e associated with various route/modal choice, as well as modelling that includes climate change-related weather challenges and cybersecurity measures. Together with partners BlueNode Inc. and Bespoke Global Logistics & Strategies, this project has a total value of almost $2.2 million where Canada’s Ocean Supercluster is contributing almost $875,000 and the balance of funding coming from project partners.

The results are in for #hurricanelee ! Over the weekend, the Maritimes felt the effects of Lee as a strong post-tropical storm making landfall just shy of hurricane status. This was a longer event than we typically experience with fast-moving weather systems. While the eye passed well to the west of the Halifax Peninsula, its turn to the north and east kept our sensor in the Bedford Basin within the outer bands of Lee for over 18 hours! Throughout the storm, we collected valuable data on atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, air temperature, relative humidity and more, all of which was consistently streamed to the OceanSync cloud in real-time. Thanks to advancements in weather forecasting, Nova Scotians were prepared for Lee's arrival. The strength and accuracy of these models directly relies on the collection of real-time observations from which to base their forecast. Our goal is to provide these observations more reliably and at low cost.
