  • The grades are in! Our 2024 #PovertyReportCards show that very little has changed since we first launched this initiative last fall, and that, in many ways, poverty and food insecurity are actually worsening across the country. With all but 3 provinces on the edge of failing and Canada’s overall score being downgraded to D-, it is very clear that governments at all levels simply aren’t taking enough action to address the unprecedented level of financial struggle faced by people across Canada. As nearly half of all Canadians feel financially worse off compared to 2023, we have seen a 30% increase in food bank demand in the last year alone, and 1 in 4 people in Canada experiencing food insecurity. The situation is urgent, and we simply cannot continue to accept it as the status quo. To see how your province is stacked up and how we think your government can ensure a Canada where no one goes hungry, please visit: https://lnkd.in/g5Cn_T7t

  • Good Neighbours Food Centre in Rosthern, SK, recently held a grand opening to celebrate the transition from a traditional food bank to a free food market. The food bank now operates using a grocery store model, allowing people struggling with food insecurity to choose the items they want instead of relying on pre-made food hampers. Executive Director Betty Rudachyk shared that the idea has been in development for several years. She stated, "It was the vision and dream from the early days of this food bank to have a system that would show more dignity, respect, and empowerment for people in need of food assistance." The grocery store model has proven to be especially beneficial for individuals with medical, cultural, and religious dietary requirements. "We are committed to ensuring that everyone who walks through our doors feels acknowledged, listened to, and respected," says Rudachyk. As food bank usage continues to grow in Canada, it's important to maintain operational efficiency while promoting client dignity. My latest think piece written with and for Food Banks Canada | Banques alimentaires Canada is out and this time, I discuss FBC's 2024 Poverty Report Cards. The reality is stark: Canada received poor scores this year. The report reveals that almost half of Canadians feel worse off financially than last year, with 1 in 4 facing food insecurity. With failing grades across the board, it's evident that urgent attention for sustained action from all levels of government is required. And as community neighbours, we too can champion change to address hunger and poverty by: -Supporting local food banks through donations or volunteering -Advocating for policy changes by contacting local representatives and raising awareness about the issue within our communities -Supporting businesses and initiatives that prioritize fair wages and working conditions To quote Food Banks Canada CEO Kirstin Beardsley, "People in Canada are struggling. Really struggling." By working together, we can (and will) create a more equitable society, and a stronger, more resilient and healthier Canada. • Existing income-based poverty measures like the Market Basket Measure (MBM) don’t tell the full story of poverty and food insecurity in Canada. Our recently published research study shows how a Material Deprivation Index (MDI) can complement measures like the MBM, and why it should be incorporated into the ways we assess levels of poverty in Canada.

  • ☀️ With summer in full swing, food banks in 215 communities across Canada are busy distributing #AfterTheBellProgram packs. 🍎 Each pack is carefully assembled at our volunteer packing event with nutritious, shelf-stable foods like sunflower seeds, cereal, oatmeal, and more. Local food banks then use grant money to supplement the packs with fresh items such as fruit, cheese, and yogurt. Kids love the variety and parents can feel good knowing that their little ones will have the energy that they need to run, jump, play, and explore all summer long! 🔗 To learn more about After the Bell and how you can help us #EndChildHunger, please visit https://lnkd.in/gZ_Dp3b7.
