With food security a top concern for governments around the world, there has never been more opportunity for Canada’s agri-food sector. Our competitors have taken note of this potential and are making unprecedented investments. If we do not act now, the opportunity will pass us by. The upcoming meeting with provincial and territorial counterparts is an opportunity to commit to bold action and unlock the full potential of Canada’s agri-food sector. We sent a letter to the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, in which we addressed key considerations ahead of the meeting. 🎧 Our very own Patrick Gill, MPPA, Senior Director of Operations & Partnerships at the Business Data Lab, recently joined Roger Pierce's "The Unsure Entrepreneur" podcast to talk about the #productivity gap in Canada and how #GenAI can transform small businesses. Our latest report "Prompting Productivity: Generative AI Adoption by Canadian Businesses", shows that while business interest in AI is high, adoption is still limited, particularly among small businesses. So, where do we go from here? 📖 Read the report for a list of recommendations for business and policymakers: https://lnkd.in/eq6xbSxR 🎙 Listen to "The Unsure Entrepreneur" episode to hear the full conversation: https://lnkd.in/eShv9X73 #AI #GenAI #ArtificialIntelligence #GenerativeArtificialIntelligence #Productivity #CanadianBusiness #SmallBusiness #Innovation #CanadianEconomy
Did you know that over the past decade, Canada's productivity has increased by less than 1% annually, placing us second last in the G7? Weak competition, underutilization of a highly skilled workforce, and insufficient investment in research and equipment are key contributors to this alarming trend. In the latest episode of The Unsure Entrepreneur podcast, I had an enlightening conversation with Patrick Gill, MPPA, Senior Director of Operations at the Business Data Lab at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. We discussed Canada's productivity challenges and the game-changing potential of generative AI (Gen AI) for small businesses. Patrick shared fascinating insights from his alarming report, 'Prompting Productivity' which highlights how AI can bridge Canada's productivity gap. For instance, only 13% of businesses using AI are looking to replace workers with automation. Instead, AI is primarily being used to augment workers' capabilities, streamline operations, and improve quality. By leveraging AI, Patrick believes small businesses can not only enhance their productivity but also gain a competitive edge in the market. "Test something, experiment, measure that experiment, replicate it, and then scale it out," he recommends. Have a listen. In the show summary there's a link to download the free report. #GenAI #Smallbusiness #Entrepreneurship #Canadianbusiness #Productivity #ChamberofCommerce

“Generational fairness” should consider how today’s actions could negatively impact our future prosperity. The Capital Gains Tax increase will limit opportunities for all generations by making Canada a less competitive and less innovative nation. Our Senior Director Alex Greco speaks to this in his latest appearance before the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates. Watch his testimony in full on ParlVu and read the Canadian Chamber’s statement on the new Capital Gains tax. ⤵️ ParlVu: https://bit.ly/3WgURXT Our statement: https://bit.ly/4chezb3 #CapitalGainsTax #CapitalGains

Today's announcement that Canada hopes to meet the 2% #NATO defence spending commitment by 2032 is underwhelming at best. Meaningfully addressing the new and evolving threats in the global #security environment will require a credible plan that is serious about shoring up and modernizing our #defence industrial base. Having a detailed and credible plan for meeting this commitment is not only integral to reestablishing Canada’s reputation as a dependable security partner—it’s also essential to maintaining our critical #trade relationships. As we approach the US Presidential election and the 2026 #CUSMA review, it is especially important that we show the world we continue to be a reliable ally. Banning employer-paid virtual health care could make it more difficult for 10 million Canadians to get essential health services. In 2023, Ottawa announced plans to issue an Interpretation Letter on the Canada Health Act to address loopholes that make Canadians pay out-of-pocket for necessary #medicalservices. This letter is expected to come out soon. However, without a clear exemption, employers might not be able to offer #virtualcare through work benefit plans anymore. This could force millions of people into busy ERs and walk-in clinics for issues that could be solved remotely. It's important to note: Employer-paid virtual health care services impose NO out-of-pocket costs on patients. That's why communications about virtual care in the public system should clearly state that employer-funded virtual health options are allowed. Learn more about why employer-paid virtual health care matters for Canadians ⤵️ https://bit.ly/4f1EEgg

After a busy weekend, I'm relieved to see goods are still flowing through our British Columbia ports (for now), but even the threat of labour disruption continues to harm predictability for Canadian businesses. Thanks to Angela Jung from Global News BC for reaching out to discuss the importance of our west coast ports to the Canadian economy, as well as the impact of repeated labour disruptions on Canada's trade relationships and global competitiveness.
