“Van Helsing” Television Series in the Works at CBS

Published

on

One of the silver screen’s most iconic monster slayers, Abraham Van Helsing will return in a brand new “Van Helsing” television series for CBS, Deadline is reporting this afternoon.

Jonathan Lee (“Lockerbie”) is writing the “Van Helsing” series for CBS. Deadline notes in today’s report, “It is believed to have landed at CBS after a hotly contested auction.”

Rob Doherty (“Elementary”) will be executive producing the upcoming horror series alongside Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman under their deal with Lionsgate Television.

Deadline details, “It is a contemporary take on the monster hunter; Dr. Abraham Van Helsing uses his uniquely inquisitive mind working alongside his ex, relentless FBI special agent Mina Harker, to solve New York City’s most harrowing cases.”

The character of Van Helsing notably got his own solo movie back in 2004, with Hugh Jackman in the title role. More recently, 2017’s The Mummy ended with the suggestion that Tom Cruise was going to become a Van Helsing-like figure for Universal’s failed “Dark Universe,” but the film’s box office underperformance forced the studio to start over from scratch.

And then there’s of course Syfy series “Van Helsing,” which actually centered on new character Vanessa Van Helsing (Kelly Overton), a descendant of Abraham Van Helsing.

Syfy’s “Van Helsing”

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.

Reginald the Vampire season two bares fangs - Syfy Vampire Series

The Jacob Batalon-starring vampire-comedy series “Reginald the Vampire” returned to SYFY for Season 2 on May 8, but we’ve learned today that we won’t be getting a third season.

SYFY has cancelled “Reginald the Vampire,” Deadline reports today.

The short-lived series “followed Reginald Andres (Jacob Batalon), who, in a world populated by beautiful, fit and vain vampires, tumbles headlong into it as an unlikely hero.”

In this year’s second season, “Reginald Andres finally got his life together – when he was turned into a vampire. While he doesn’t fit into the stereotypical expectations of what a vampire looks like – he’s not chiseled or classically handsome – Reginald has found his place amongst an unlikely cohort that includes the cool vampire who sired him, the former vampire chieftain turned unexpected ally (or is she?), and his co-worker/former girlfriend.”

Em Haine (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”), Mandela Van Peebles (“Mayor of Kingstown”), and Savannah Basley (“SurrealEstate”) starred alongside Jacob Batalon.

“Reginald the Vampire” is based on the book series by Johnny B. Truant. Harley Peyton (“Chucky”) was the executive producer/showrunner of the SYFY television series.
