How to update your business information on Yelp

When consumers are in need of a product or service and they find your business on Yelp, one of the biggest things that could stop them from choosing your business is inaccurate or missing information. Is your phone number listed correctly? Did you share that you’re open late? Is your business cash only? Ensuring your information is up to date helps potential customers find you and determine if you’re the best fit for them.

It’s simple to update your information on Yelp, and it starts with claiming your business page. Once you’ve claimed your business and are logged in, click Business Information—on desktop, it’s listed in the menu on the left; on the Yelp for Business app, look for Biz Info in the bottom navigation bar.

What business information sections should I update?

The biggest benefit to having a complete Yelp Page is being able to differentiate yourself from competitors. Take advantage of the free tools that will help you enhance your presence on Yelp and bring your business’s personality and brand to life. By adding custom information to your page, you have a better chance of selling a potential consumer on why they should do business with you.

Basic business info

This is where you can upload your basic business info: business name, phone number, address, website, etc. Depending on your business category, you can also add information like your service area or a menu.

Categories and services

Defining your business using categories and specific services helps consumers find you on Yelp and understand exactly what you offer—from teeth whitening to dishwasher repair. This information is listed front and center on your Yelp Page so that consumers don’t have to leave Yelp to see what you specialize in.

Check out Yelp’s full list of categories and pick up to three that make the most sense for your business. For example, is your cat cafe a coffee bar and also a pet adoption center? Add the proper categories so your community knows the full reach of your business. Then you can choose an unlimited number of individual services based on those categories.

Amenities

Detailed information—like the currency you accept, if you serve alcohol, if dogs are allowed, if you have Wi-Fi or gender-neutral restrooms—can be updated in the Amenities section (also called Attributes). These are category dependent and differ by business type. You can also add attributes that identify your business, like woman-owned, Black-owned, Latinx-owned, Asian-owned, LGBTQ-owned, and veteran-owned.

Additionally, amenities that show on your Yelp Business Page can be voted on by consumers—for example, if your business is good for kids, pricey, loud, or allows general attire.

Hours

It’s important to let Yelp users know what your regular operating hours are. Plus many consumers search using the “open now” filter, and if you don’t have hours listed accurately, you may not appear as an option in the Yelp search results.

You can also easily set up special or holiday hours, giving your customers a heads up when you’re open or closed outside your standard times. Maybe you’re open late for holiday shopping or closed for a few days of renovations—keep customers posted on when they can expect your business to be available.

From the business

Most businesses are birthed from a light bulb “aha!” moment. Whatever lead to that idea and brings you a sense of passion day after day, shout it from the rooftop—or at least from your “From this business” section, which consists of three parts:

Specialties

This is where you can list special details about your services and highlight what makes you stand out. Is your plumbing business family-owned and -operated for over 30 years? Does your restaurant use all compostable material in its to-go packaging? All of this information is worth sharing, and when a consumer is contemplating choosing your business, it can help build your case.

History

Here you can explain the background of your business. Yelp users want to know your story and how you got to where you currently are. There is even a special space for what year your business was established.

Intro

This “Meet the Owner/Manager” section gives your Yelp listing that true local feel. Take the time to let people know who you are and more importantly—why you do it.
