Android emulators are a dime a dozen these days due to the huge surge in demand for using Android-exclusive apps on desktop computers. Tools like BlueStacks, Andy, and Nox may be the most popular, but new and interesting alternatives still keep popping up. LeapDroid is one of the latest: it goes light on the extra functionalities to make way for smooth emulation, even for quite graphics-heavy games.

Perhaps due to its early stage of development, the entire tool is minimalist and gets straight to the point – from the installation, where you literally have to do nothing at all, and the emulation itself (which for once is based on a virtual machine running with VirtualBox in the background), to the program interface, where the only content you see that doesn’t appear how it looks on Android is a small toolbar with the basic Android shortcuts like your on-off switch, camera button, and a button to open your virtual keyboard. Not much else.

We’ve tested it with a few games like Clash Royale, HearthStone, and Mortal Kombat X – and its performance is impressive. Also, the program doesn’t let you make any extra changes to the graphics or viewing mode, which obviously makes the speed way better. Obviously performance varies depending on your machine, but the technological range is still big enough for there not to be too many problems.

All that aside, the app’s behavior is very stable, despite having a few annoying defects like the impossibility of installing apps from APKs by dragging them from the guest operating system. But its developers have confirmed that they’re working on this and other features that are currently essential on any good Android emulator.
