About us
We are committed to doing our part in helping society meet the dual challenge of meeting the world’s growing demand for energy while reducing environmental impacts and the risks of climate change. As an important supplier of oil and gas, a major refiner of crude oil for fuels and lubricants, and one of Europe's leading petrochemical companies, employing over 14,000 people across Europe, we have been helping to meet energy demand in Europe for over a century through our main commercial brands: Esso, Mobil and Mobil1. We are committed to addressing the key challenge of energy development in Europe — developing affordable and secure supplies of energy in a safe and environmental responsible manner while maintaining EU competitiveness. Our products are marketed through a network of service stations, and also to commercial segments, such as aviation, industrial and wholesale, equipment manufacturers, and marine.

Our colleagues Yelda Guven and Marie-Laure Halleman from ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions recently spoke at the Global Energy Transition Congress and Exhibition in Milan. This event brought together a range of actors from across the energy value chain and industries to share tangible, scalable and pragmatic approaches to accelerate the energy transition. Yelda spoke at a panel on “climate change regulation without borders”, where she addressed the global landscape in energy, the different approaches to regulation around the globe, and the importance of reducing the cost of the energy transition on consumers. At a separate panel, titled “Insights from the forefront: business leaders at the helm of energy transition ventures”, Marie-Laure discussed the impact of policies on scaling up hydrogen in the EU. Some takeaways: 🌍 There is global competition for capital to support decarbonization around the world. 📈 Incentives are needed to attract investment and so is clarity in policies. 📈 Governments cannot afford to subsidize the energy transition forever. Ultimately, the world must move towards market-based mechanisms. 🌍 Enabling cross-border transportation and storage of CO2 through mutual framework recognition, including with the UK, is key to achieving EU objectives. 📚 EU energy-intensive and trade-exposed industries need effective and sustained carbon leakage protection. 📚 Policies should be technology-neutral and recognize all forms of low-carbon hydrogen. 💡 Collaboration across the value chain, but also with governments and researchers, is key for the energy transition. In case you missed it, ExxonMobil recently added Air Liquide to the world’s largest low-carbon hydrogen project. 🌍 Our agreement will support the production of low-carbon hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia at our Baytown, Texas facility. How? By transporting low-carbon hydrogen through Air Liquide’s existing pipeline network. Our aim is to advance the low-carbon hydrogen market and drive toward a cleaner energy future. This year marked a special milestone – the 15th anniversary of the Sci-Tech Challenge, our flagship science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programme in partnership with JA Europe. The challenge invites secondary school students across Europe to put their STEM skills to use and propose solutions to real-life challenges. This year, teams pitched their ideas to utilize lower emissions technologies to pave the way towards the energy transition. 💡 Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is considered one of the critical technologies required to achieve net-zero and meet the climate goals outlined in the Paris Agreement. 📝 Supportive policies are needed to spur the investment required to deploy #CCS at pace and at scale. We recently signed the “Oslo declaration on low carbon value chains” which was handed over to Belgian policymakers during the Belgian Economic Mission to Norway. It outlines five key policy actions to support the deployment of low carbon value chains in Belgium, focusing on decreasing undue complexity and regulatory burden, supporting a technology-neutral and market-based approach, flexible energy availability and cross-border CO2 infrastructure in the North Sea. In Europe, we are considering several CCS opportunities, including in Belgium, the Netherlands, France and the UK. Scaling up CCS investment in Europe requires collaborative efforts and market-based, technology-neutral policies. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dEq8gqdD #OsloDeclaration

Competitive. Pragmatic. Business-friendly. EU leaders included these words in the strategic agenda, the set of principles that will guide policymaking for the next five years. I’m happy to see the focus on boosting competitiveness, making Europe more business friendly, and reducing regulatory burden. It seems EU policymakers have listened to the concerns raised by business and industry leaders over the past few months. As the new European Commission forms and establishes its work programme, it must keep these priorities top-of-mind, particularly as it turns its focus towards implementing the #GreenDeal. It is also encouraging to see the agenda recognizes the role of ALL net-zero and low-carbon technologies in the energy transition. To meet the EU’s net zero 2050 ambitions, industry investments must increase significantly. My company, ExxonMobil, plans to spend $20 billion globally on lower-emission investments from 2022 through 2027. It will be difficult to spend part of these funds in Europe unless policymakers truly deliver on what is outlined in the strategic agenda. My team and I at ExxonMobil Europe look forward to working together with policymakers on a policy framework that nurtures innovation, drives investment, and secures the long-term competitiveness of European industry. #EUCO #IndustrialDeal
