In this weekend’s interview with L'Echo and De Tijd, our CEO Paul Tummers and Jef Colruyt, former CEO and current chairman of Colruyt Group, Virya Energy and Korys shared their vision for the future of renewable energy. Three key aspects were highlighted: Virya Energy's strategic reinvestments. The sale of Parkwind last year has provided funds to invest in new projects. Virya aims to expand its production capacity to nearly 3.5 gigawatts over the next decade using the sale's proceeds. Virya Energy is advancing renewable hydrogen production projects in Zeebrugge and the Netherlands, targeting industrial applications and large-scale transportation. It is key to be pragmatic and agile going forward. Lastly, Virya Energy developing B2B services to support medium-sized companies in transitioning to renewable energy by providing tailored, fit-for-purpose solutions. “We want to bring energy in the form that is interesting for customers. That is possible through a combination of battery storage, charging stations, solar panels, but also with a long-term contract for electricity from our wind turbines. It's a new style though, closer to the customer. 🎇 As we enter a new promising year, let's take a moment to look back on the reasons we believe in fit-for-purpose energy. Our CEO Paul Tummers sums it up best in his editorial published in #Fokus magazine last December:   To achieve the energy transition, it is key to: 1️⃣Prioritize Energy Reduction: the importance of reducing energy consumption as a primary focus in our journey toward sustainability. 2️⃣Electrify when it makes sense: continued electrification is pivotal in the energy transition. However, there remain limitations in certain sectors such as heavy transport, aviation, heavy-duty vehicles, and certain industrial applications. These require specific, fit-for-purpose solutions. 3️⃣Develop the Green Hydrogen sector: developing green hydrogen and its derivatives is a crucial route in the quest for sustainable energy solutions, when electrification is not possible or not optimal. Find Alternative Solutions: Alongside electrification and green hydrogen, he advocates for developing geothermic energy and concentrated solar power, particularly for applications requiring local heat production.   More importantly, all green energy solutions must be treated equally: To conclude, Paul states that achieving a net-zero society is a monumental task, requiring a strategic combination of various complementary solutions to optimize the overall cost. With the inclusion of DATS 24 within Virya Energy this year, we are proud to take an active role in the future of green mobility! Whether through green hydrogen or electricity, DATS 24 is at the forefront of the energy transition. This first public charging station on a Colruyt parking lot proposes 10 charging points, including 6 fast chargers. 🌍 Yesterday was World Sustainable Transport day🚗   At Virya Energy, we work today for the sustainable energy of tomorrow. The World Sustainable Transport Day underscores the vital need for a Fit for Purpose approach in the energy transition: transportation is multiple, and each application requires its own form of sustainable energy, from individual cars to maritime freight.   In parallel to a much-needed reduction in non-necessary transportation, we believe that electrification and the development of sustainable hydrogen (and its derivatives) go hand in hand to answer the challenges posed by a carbon-neutral transport sector. While electric cars are gaining popularity as the solution for individual transportation, we demonstrated recently that sustainable hydrogen can offer an answer to intensive fleets looking to avoid idle time with our hydrogen taxi pilot project. Hydrogen might also be the key to sustainable heavy transportation by trucks.   As one solution doesn't fit all, aviation and maritime transportation will also require specific solutions to go net zero.
