About us
Lie Detectors is a Europe-wide journalist-led non-profit that works to help teenagers, pre-teens and teachers tell news facts from news fakes and navigate the shades of bias in between. It advises the EU within the High Level Expert Group on Fake News and of the Expert Group on Digital Literacy which work to find sustainable solutions to the spread of misinformation and to boost news literacy in Europe. Lie Detectors selects and trains professional journalists for classroom visits designed to start the conversation with school children and their teachers on how to consume news online in an ever more challenging digital universe. Lie Detectors is funded by Hansjoerg Wyss and the Wyss Foundation and accredited by the Kind Baudouin Foundation. We are filling permanent positions and and rolling internships on a regular basis as we operate in new countries. Lie Detectors has no interest in telling young people what to think and takes no money from commercial or political entities. It aims to empower them to base their choices on reliable information and be actively aware of bias and persuasion. Child safety is nothing new: children worldwide have long been taught not to accept sweets from strangers. As they increase their consumption of media, they need news literacy to do so wisely.

🏢 Investigative journalism, media literacy, local training afternoons – welcome to Publix, a new centre for #journalism, strengthening #democracy, shaping the public sphere…… and, a home for Lie Detectors’ Team Germany in #Berlin. 🇩🇪 It’s more than six years since the first conversations about this six-storey initiative between Tim Göbel, Mia Pascale Bergert , our Juliane von Reppert-Bismarck and the late Wilfried Ruetten. We’re excited to have our Germany team - Annkatrin Kaiser, Maxime-Robert Grewe, Cindy Mireya Sanchez Fernandez (who are all in the picture), Marica Taime Rauschnick and our Education Strategy Adviser Annemieke Akkermans – move into the building. 🚛 We say a big hello to our new neighbours! It’s wonderful to be able to undertake our work alongside Germany’s flagship media literacy alliance Journalismus macht Schule and pioneering fact-checkers CORRECTIV as well as Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Investigate Europe, More in Common Deutschland, Tactical Tech, Diskutier Mit Mir, Seek Initiative, Netzwerk Recherche, laif foundation for independent photojournalism, Reporterfabrik and Superrr Labs in our state of the art office building. 😎 Thanks to the new location, Lie Detectors will offer local training events for Berlin’s educational community. Watch this space for more information. You can check out Publix's website here: https://www.publix.de/en/

Great work Caroline Becker. Thanks so much for your successful participation. You're making an important difference for the hundreds of children you meet.

We’ll be standing alongside our partners at Journalismus macht Schule on 6 June as part of the #IchStehAuf campaign in support of democracy and diversity. Thanks to Lisa Kuner for visiting Carl-von-Linné-Grundschule in #Leipzig on the campaign day to promote media literacy. It is one of more than 400 school visits that Lie Detectors participating journalists will make this year in #Germany. Thanks to Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Heidehof Stiftung in cooperation with ZEIT Verlagsgruppe and ARD for the campaign initiative. #EmpoweredCitizens #Democracy #Journalism

🌐 As part of my traineeship at Lie Detectors, I had the privilege of attending a highly informative workshop on platform data access for researchers, organized by European Digital Media Observatory. This workshop delved into the rapidly evolving landscape of data access for researchers, underscored by the 2022 Strengthened Code of Practice on Online Disinformation and the legal obligations set by article 40 of #DSA. Key Takeaways: 🔍 Online platforms are now legally required to provide researchers with access to non-personal, anonymized, and aggregated data through APIs. ⚙️ Despite the introduction of new tools for data access, significant challenges persist, such as limited awareness, restricted access for civil society researchers, and complex application procedures. The workshop took place in the overall framework of the #EDMO annual conference, in Brussels, where media and policy practitioners, policymakers, academics, regulators, journalists, and members of civil society convene to discuss the challenges of online #disinformation and how to tackle them.

#EDMO week continues with fascinating insights into how easy or rather challenging it is to enforce rules and monitor co-regulatory protocols across the EU that are designed to counter #disinformation and its monetisation. Thanks for great presentations this morning by Keith Peter Kiely , Wojciech Paczynski and to the entire community working on this important task.

2024 #EDMO annual conference kicks off today, a two-day Brussels gathering that will spotlight #AI, EU elections, platform regulation and evaluation techniques as seen by European fact-checkers and media literacy experts, EU officials and VLOP representatives. I’m delighted to present - first thing Tuesday - the protocols we’ve developed at Lie Detectors to safeguard #quality and measure #impact in media literacy. I’ll be talking about creating trust in the education space, adhering to expert consensus, and the urgent question of measuring and quantifying the impact on society of our community’s crucial media literacy work. Stop by at 09:00 CET ON Tuesday or come find me at any other time. I’m thrilled to be there with Lie Detectors colleagues Rayan Temara Valentina Milanese Lies Feron. And looking forward to catching up with dear colleagues and allies in the field.

That was fun! I have been a journalist for about 15 years now and pretty much from the beginning I've been involved with this whole disinformation topic. A couple of years ago I started visiting classrooms for Lie Detectors to talk with kids about how they can find out if what they see on TikTok and elswhere is true or not. This week, at the European Conference »Empowering Students in the Digital Age« in Munich, together with Annemieke Akkermans, I got to give a workshop for a room full of teachers from all over Europe. We talked about how they can give their students back home some effectivs tools against disinformation. And I'd like to believe that we had a good time doing so.
