Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, a leading steel manufacturer, implemented a sophisticated condition monitoring system to optimise the timing for replacing worn components in its mechanical plant. The system uses vibration measurement to detect early signs of wear, even at lower speeds where traditional systems fail. In 2017, the system identified wear in a critical gearbox that was designed to last over 20 years but showed wear signs after less than six years. The advanced system provided precise tracking of wear, allowing for optimal replacement scheduling during planned shutdowns and preventing unexpected downtimes. The gearbox's wear was monitored continuously, and with the help of vibration specialists, the team decided to delay the replacement until the condition required it. This approach ensured the gearbox was replaced just in time, avoiding unnecessary costs and operational interruptions. The success was attributed to the condition monitoring system's integration with the #ibaPDA process data recording system and the close collaboration between maintenance and vibration experts, highlighting an exemplary maintenance strategy.
