Everyone has a role to play in reducing the risk of delaying or stopping emissions reductions due to the availability of carbon removal including academics, civil society, investors, philanthropists, media, watchdogs, companies and governments. Certifiers and verifiers have a particularly important role in supporting three of the twelve solutions to mitigation deterrence we have identified by: ⚖ Requiring like-for-like compensation 📈 Only planning for limited availability of CDR 📏 Developing principles for prioritising CDR For a full list of 12 solutions to mitigation deterrence, see our publication here: https://lnkd.in/eRJdDtdc #RecomMonday #mitigationdeterrence #carbonremoval

🌳 This week, we consider the importance of growing the EU’s land carbon sink to reach required capacity by 2050. 🎯 To meet existing and expected targets outlined in the Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) Regulation and the 2040 Target impact assessment for 2030 and 2040-2050, five interventions can be pursued in tandem. These interventions (depicted in wedges of roughly estimated size) collectively preserve the land sink achieved by 2030, drive LULUCF emissions reductions and increase land-based removals through EU, member state, and private sector action. 🔎 An EU carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategy should ensure that current and new policy approaches cohere and that emissions reductions and carbon removal measures are complementary. Check out our recommendations for developing an enduring policy framework for CDR here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAJHeU_r #LULUCF #CDR #InfoFriday

🧮 Numbers speak louder than words The 2nd edition of the 'State of CDR' report reveals the gap between our carbon dioxide removal (CDR) needs and the current CDR deployment, and highlights the instrumental role policies play in driving further innovation and demand. 📖 Read it here: https://lnkd.in/d97fNnEE In the EU, important steps have been taken to develop and deploy high-quality CDR, via the Carbon Removal Certification Framework, the 2040 targets and ICM communications and several member states negative emissions strategies. 🌟 The EU and its member states now have a crucial role to play in developing a comprehensive and coherent EU-wide strategy to scale up a portfolio of CDR methods, with separate 2040 targets for emission reductions and carbon removals as its north star.   This and more was discussed last Thursday during our event dedicated to the state of CDR in the EU. Many thanks to our speakers Oliver Geden, Steve Smith, Andrea Klaric, Ulriikka Aarnio, Artur Runge-Metzger and Chris Sherwood for your valuable contribution, Rebecca Gualandi for moderating this insightful conversation, and Christoph Beuttler and Rodica Avornic for your scene setters!   We hope the reflections drawn from the second edition of the State of CDR and discussed with our panel inspire you to take action. ▶️ Watch the event recording here: https://lnkd.in/eAsTk2Gh   ⛱️☀️ We are looking forward to meeting again in September, refreshed and inspired! #StateofCDR #CRCF #2040targets

🌼 It's #RecomMonday! How can the EU boost research, innovation and development (RD&I) funding for carbon removal? ✅ Make a clear and significant financial commitment to EU RD&I on carbon removal in the next Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034. ✅ Make carbon removal a research priority area in the next Framework Programme for R&I (FP10) and Multiannual Financial Framework. ✅ Ensure that an overarching EU CDR Strategy outlines a long-term plan for CDR RD&I in Europe, including clear goals and a mapping of research gaps. ✅ Make the eligibility criteria and application processes for research funding clear and easy to navigate. ✅ Develop a centralised platform for EU-level RD&I funding for CDR to make it easier to find available EU funding options and track CDR funding flows. 🌥️ Imagine for a moment that the EU reaches its 2040 targets for greenhouse gas emissions reduction. In this #InfoFriday 👇, we explore the hypothesis that the EU will deliver 90% and 100% reductions in net GHG emissions relative to 1990 by 2040 and shortly before 2050, respectively. The 2030 target corresponds to the 55% emissions reduction target and the additional ambition set under the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry Regulation (LULUCF). The 2040 and 2050 emission levels are based on scenario 3 from the 2040 Climate Targets impact assessment. Given that durable net zero is not met in this modelled scenario, the dashed blue area represents the additional higher-durability removals needed to reach such a state. Biogenic emissions include agricultural emissions and half of the emissions from waste treatment based on an assumed 50% biogenic fraction (LULUCF), reaching 333 MtCO2/year in 2050 based on scenario 3 of the 2040 targets impact assessment. 📈 For more modelisation to help you visualise the expectations set by EU regulations, visit our infographics page: https://lnkd.in/eDyrKvTg 🚀 And read our 18 policy recommendations for an EU CDR strategy, from which this infographic is taken: https://lnkd.in/eAJHeU_r #CDR #CarbonRemoval #2040target

Yesterday we brought together leading experts, civil society, industry representatives and EU policymakers to discuss the role of carbon removal in delivering on the European Green Deal during a closed-door workshop. The workshop provided an opportunity for Carbon Gap and the co-organiser PIK to set out their different perspectives on how to best integrate CDR into EU mitigation efforts, with discussions focusing on 3 main questions:   🎯 What should be the goals and conditions of integrating carbon removal into an EU compliance mechanism such as the EU ETS? 🔧 What additional tools would need to be applied to account for overshoot and net-negative targets for 2050? 🏦 What advantage would an EU Carbon Central Bank have compared to other institutions in accounting for CDR credits?   Throughout the session, there was broad consensus around the need for a coherent EU policy framework to support the deployment and scale-up of carbon removal in the years to come. There were divergent views amongst the co-organisers and the participants regarding exactly what role CDR should play in the future, shaping the preferred policy pathway moving forward.    We will continue driving discussions forward, with key issues and next steps to be set out in a forthcoming unattributed summary of the session.    We would like to thank PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research for co-organising the event, the speakers Ottmar Edenhofer, Mette Quinn, Michael Pahle, Helen Bray, Jutta Paulus and Christoph Beuttler as well as all the participants who helped make the meeting a success.   Watch this space for future publications on carbon removal pathways in the EU Green Deal. #carbonremoval #greendeal #climateaction

Welcome to the bi-weekly #CleanTechEU thread! This week, we look into the recently launched second edition of the State of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), ahead of tomorrow’s in-person discussion in Brussels. ✍️ Read the report and register here: https://lnkd.in/e69bDXpe Currently, only a small fraction of CDR results from novel methods such as enhanced rock weathering, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) or biochar. And yet, we need every sustainable CDR method deployed if we want to reach our climate goals. About 7-9 Gt CO2e of CDR is needed annually to reach net zero by 2050. ▶️ To hear more on this, watch the presentation of the #StateofCDR: https://lnkd.in/egGEh-8u The EU urgently needs concrete and clear national plans from its member states to better assess its potential to realise its climate goals. For now, there is a gap between levels of CDR proposed and what is needed to meet the Paris Agreement goals. This gap must be filled with policy support, innovation and markets aligned with rigorous monitoring, reporting and verification protocols (MRV). ▶️ Watch our recent panels held during our strategy launch to delve deeper into expert recommendations: https://lnkd.in/eY3BHsFQ And this is just a snapshot of what the State of Carbon Dioxide Removal report has to offer. To hear more about key findings and how the EU should take them into account to deploy CDR at scale, join us tomorrow in Brussels. This event aims to bring public and private enterprises together to discuss world-leading research to achieve global net-zero emissions and sustainable development and explain Oxford’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford's ambition behind leading this report. The event is co-organised with the teams at Oxford Net Zero and CO₂RE - The Greenhouse Gas Removal Hub. The report’s message is clear: 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭’𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐬 𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞-𝐮𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐃𝐑. 👉 Here are 18 policies we propose for the EU to achieve just that: https://lnkd.in/eAJHeU_r Interested in what is out there? Carbon dioxide removal companies are flourishing in the ecosystem, supported by accelerators such as remove or AlliedOffsets, which provides a database of over 850 CDR companies worldwide. And with that, we wrap up the CleanTechEU thread! Thank you for joining us and be sure to follow Carbon Gap for updates.    ✒️ Don’t miss out as E3G pens the next thread on X on Wednesday, July 17.

🚀 Last week, EU leaders adopted their Strategic Agenda for 2024-2029, a plan that steers the EU's future direction and goals. Here are the highlights of their stated goals on climate and innovation: ⭐ The EU must bolster competitiveness and close the growth, productivity, and innovation gaps with partners and competitors, build capacity in sensitive sectors, including net-zero technologies, through public and private funding; ⭐ On the path to climate neutrality by 2050, the EU should harness the potential of the green and digital transitions to “create the markets, industries and high-quality jobs of the future”, including by providing a more supportive environment for scaling up Europe’s net-zero technologies manufacturing capacity; ⭐ Promoting innovation and a business-friendly environment, boosting R&I capacity in emerging and enabling technologies will help place the Union as a trailblazer internationally; ⭐ Europe must pursue a just and fair climate transition, leaving no one behind. The next EU political cycle will be critical to ensure support for carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) as a key net-zero technology for Europe. Take a look at our ideas for a comprehensive EU CDR strategy 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAJHeU_r The full Agenda is here: https://lnkd.in/e6wNMM68 ✉️ For more context, read the four key asks we shared in an open letter co-signed with 53 other organisations a month prior: https://lnkd.in/eHgi2Jeh #CarbonRemoval #EUStrategicAgenda
