1$\begingroup$ is this also the reason why military planes are not white? $\endgroup$– user13107Commented Mar 17, 2014 at 7:01

6$\begingroup$ I'm not so sure about white being easy to spot - at least in my personal experience. The most visible plane I've ever seen was painted an utterly hideous shade of yellow-green (about the same color they paint the ARFF trucks) - I saw that thing buzzing away in the pattern when I was about 8 miles from the airport and never lost sight of it! $\endgroup$– voretaq7Commented Mar 17, 2014 at 16:09

4$\begingroup$ @user13107 White is actually pretty hard to spot when looking up at it, particularly if there are clouds. This is why some airplanes have white tops (easier to spot with the ground as a backdrop) and dark colored bottoms which stand out from the sky. $\endgroup$– LnafzigerCommented Mar 17, 2014 at 18:39

5$\begingroup$ And consider that a lot of birds and especially fish do it the other way around, lighter underneath ;-) $\endgroup$– Steve JessopCommented Mar 17, 2014 at 19:24

2$\begingroup$ @SteveJessop, yeah, countershading is very effective. That's partly why military aircraft are often camo on top, lighter solid underneath. $\endgroup$– egidCommented Mar 17, 2014 at 23:31

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. aircraft-design), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
