Safe drinking water is now readily available to more than 10,000 people in the King Cetshwayo District in South Africa, thanks to a partnership with our Hillside Aluminium operation. Previously, people in the area needed to travel long distances to collect safe drinking water for their households. Hillside invested R5.7m, supporting the construction of boreholes and the installation of infrastructure, including seven handpumps, 36 water storage tanks, 17 standpipes (taps) and more than 9,300 metres of water pipes.  Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gBs6gVT5 #mining #metals #partnerships #hillsidealuminium

Going 🆙! Congratulations to the team at our South32 Hermosa project on reaching this impressive construction milestone safely and ahead of schedule.

International shipping is fundamental to many industries, including mining – but seafaring can be a challenging, isolating job with long stints at sea and away from loved ones. So over the past few weeks, our team has been making some special deliveries to seafarers who are helping transport our products around the world. A few years ago, when the pandemic led to even tighter conditions for seafarers, our Freight, Alumina and Raw Materials team started an initiative called ‘We Care’. The initiative arranges for care packages to be delivered to South32 chartered vessels across all our terminals globally during December to coincide with the holiday season, as well as during the weeks leading up to 25 June, the International Day of the Seafarer. The team has provided Wi-Fi dongles, data cards, cakes, chocolates, gift hampers and other goodies to crew onboard South32 chartered vessels at ports in Australia, China, India, South Korea, South Africa and Mozambique – as well as facilitating visits ashore where possible. The global push to reduce carbon emissions through clean energy sources like wind turbines and solar PV panels will further increase aluminium demand due to its capacity to provide robust, lightweight structures and its electrical conductivity. ⚡️☀️🔌💡
