Shopping Centre News Australia is excited to launch its latest edition: CBD Guns 2024! This year, we’ve changed our reporting criteria for CBD Guns and included centres that were previously only recorded in the Big Guns tables; for example, Westfield Sydney and Melbourne Central. They are Big Guns, of course, with a GLA in excess of 50,000m2, but they are also a CBD centre and we think it should be featured here as well. Congratulations to this year's top-performing CBD centres: 🥇 #1 MAT $(million) – Westfield Sydney (NSW), Scentre Group (Owner of Westfield destinations in Aus and NZ) 🥇 #1 MAT/m2 – The Strand Arcade (NSW), Vicinity Centres & Link REIT 🥇 #1 Specialty MAT/m2 – QueensPlaza (QLD), Vicinity Centres View the full report and online data tables here: https://lnkd.in/gzq-cMCu In this edition, we profile Rundle Mall. SCN's Publisher met with Andrew White, Adelaide Economic Development Agency for a tour of Rundle Mall and got a detailed ‘insider view’ on what AEDA’s role is when it comes to this precinct. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gg7C2-2g For our special feature, we invited nine trailblazing women who are at the forefront of the property industry: Manuela De Rossi, Lendlease Alison Flemming, Mirvac Christine Hogg, Woolworths Group Ruth Jothy, Elanor Investors Group Yvette Keatings, Charter Hall Melissa Kingham, Haben Property Fund Kirrily Lord, Vicinity Centres Fiona Mackenzie, Coles Group Amanda Steele, ISPT Their journeys and experiences not only inspire but also challenge traditional narratives, paving the way for future generations. • As demand for flexible workspaces continues to rise with companies looking to provide a productive and professional environment for their team without costly commercial overheads, the need to access cost-effective premium workspaces closer to where employees live has grown. In response, Melbourne’s largest provider of suburban flexible workspace and co-working centres, Waterman Workspaces, is expanding its network across Melbourne with two new state-of-the-art workspaces opening by the end of 2024 in Moonee Ponds Central and Clayton’s M-City shopping centre to cater to the needs of the diverse and growing business communities they each serve. The opening of Waterman Moonee Ponds and Waterman Clayton, along with Waterman Melbourne CBD workspace in Collins Street set to open in 2025, reflect Waterman’s commitment to bringing a vibrant, professional workspace close to where the majority of Melburnians live, while providing more cost-effective opportunities for businesses to thrive in convenient, high-traffic locations. “We are excited to bring our innovative workspace solutions to Moonee Ponds, a vibrant community with a rich business culture. Waterman’s mission is to create spaces with all the tools and resources necessary to empower businesses to succeed, and we believe this new space will be a very valuable addition to the local community.” said Neville Waterman, Waterman Founder & Managing Director. According to Mirvac's General Manager–Retail, Alison Flemming, "Moonee Ponds Central is a fantastic retail space and only seven kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD – it’s an area that continues to grow and expand, including the business community. As some businesses look to pivot to a hybrid style of working, we are thrilled to be able to partner with Waterman to offer the local community the opportunity to work in a great space, close to home. We are always looking for ways to diversify our offering across our retail spaces and this is just another example of how we can offer something different to our customers.” Just as Waterman Moonee Ponds' location was chosen for its proximity to a burgeoning business community, Waterman reinforced “Clayton’s M-City is a dynamic integrated, retail, office, hotel and residential hub that aligns perfectly with our vision of providing flexible, convenient workspaces that offer outstanding local amenity and easy access. This centre will provide businesses with a cost-effective way to maintain premium work environments for their teams.” Property Director for Schiavello, vito chiodo welcomed the addition of Waterman Clayton to M-City. “As a Melbourne property developer, Schiavello has long held a strong passion for creating world-class buildings and communities. We look forward to the introduction of Waterman to the asset and providing a new offering in our catchment.” #shoppingcentres #coworking https://lnkd.in/g-MVwB2G

  • Australian-based investment and funds management company Realside Property has purchased Perth’s Maddington Central for $107 million in its first retail acquisition. CBRE’s Simon Rooney and James Douglas managed the off-market sale campaign on behalf of Vicinity Centres. Linda Rudd, Realside Chief Executive Officer, said: “Realside is excited to finalise the acquisition of Maddington Central, a shopping centre that we have particularly coveted given the significant mixed-used opportunity that the property provides. This is our first retail acquisition and has created a key opportunity to diversify and expand on our existing office and industrial portfolio. It provides Realside the ability to bring together the collective experience of our team to deliver an improved retail offering. “Realside will work with Sirona Urban, who are appointed as asset and development manager, to assist in delivering our vision for the property to unlock a revitalised retail and community precinct,” said Rudd. Located 18km south-east of the Perth CBD, the 27,661m2 convenience based sub-regional shopping centre is anchored by Coles, Woolworths and Kmart, which contribute $138.1 million to the centre’s annual turnover of $208.7 million. https://lnkd.in/gYSdPtFM

  • GURNER™ Group and Qualitas have this week acquired the remaining interest of Jam Factory from primary development partner Newmark Capital. The developer and alternative real estate manager will now become the sole owners of the 20,000m2 iconic site in South Yarra, where they will deliver a $2.75 billion city-defining project. The GURNER, Qualitas JV is injecting $180 million in equity to settle on and develop the site with plans to create a world-leading mixed-use precinct with around 15,000m2 of commercial office, more than 20,000m2 of retail, Village Cinemas, a large wellness precinct, two hotels and ultra luxury residential towers. Qualitas Global Head of Real Estate and Co-Founder, Mark Fischer said: “It’s great to be partnering with GURNER on this project as we look to deliver on the world-class vision that the project team has set for the Jam Factory redevelopment. Our ability to provide flexible capital for this large project demonstrates our equity investment capabilities.” The Jam Factory redevelopment will anchor the transformation of Chapel Street to bring the energy back and reinvigorate it to become the iconic street it once so famously was. GURNER Founder and Executive Chairman Tim Gurner said: “Building on the vision we created with Newmark, I truly believe this to be Melbourne’s most important and iconic regeneration site. “We are very excited to be able to deliver this incredible project with our long term strategic partner in Qualitas and we know together we can revitalise this critical site for Melbourne,” he said. The revised ownership structure will allow the JV to phase the delivery of the project into smaller stages that are able to be built independently, which is important in this challenging construction environment, to de-risk the development site long-term. The stage 1 build is currently under negotiation, with the demolition expected to commence in early 2025. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gmcHegN2 #jointventure #mixedusedevelopment

  • How often have we read fairly recently of the demise of CBD retail? More often than not, it is down to sensationalism – that sells newspapers – and many journalists these days look for sensationalism rather than truth. There are some startling figures in this article by Hamish Coleman of Urbis and Melissa Neumaier of CommBank iQ first published in the well-read pages of the CBD Guns edition of SCN Magazine. It’s authoritative, expert and, in Shopping Centre News Australia’s view, required reading for shopping centre executives. #shoppingcentres #cbd #industry #benchmarks #research https://lnkd.in/gv5m3pP4

From Chadstone to Westfield Booragoon, forward-thinking shopping centres around Australia are now taking an active step to support their male customers living with incontinence, with thanks to a wonderfully convenient community health initiative called BINS4Blokes driven by the Continence Foundation of Australia. Data from the Continence Foundation of Australia cites incontinence is now experienced by as many as 1 in 4 Australians aged 15 years and over, including 1.34 million Australian boys and men of which 36% are under the age of 50. Shopping centres who have already placed BINS4Blokes incontinence product disposal bins in their amenities to help men and boys living with incontinence to confidently navigate their local community include Vicinity Centres Chadstone, Mirvac’s Cooleman Court (ACT), Scentre Group (Owner of Westfield destinations in Aus and NZ)'s Westfield Innaloo (WA), and Westfield Kotara (NSW), as well as St Ives Shopping Village (NSW). The program is looking to expand to as many shopping centres in Australia as possible. Dr Gian Sberna, CEO at the Continence Foundation of Australia believes “Providing bins in shopping centres can make a difference to the lives of men with incontinence and encourage everyone to talk openly about it.” Since BINS4Blokes were installed at Australia's leading shopping centre Chadstone, Leigh Caulfield Senior Operations Manager at Vicinity Centres has reported positive public feedback. He felt their seamless integration into the centre’s sanitary services required minimal effort and costs, making shopping centres an optimal setting for expanding the availability of BINS4Blokes. “Consumers now also have higher expectations of retailers and brands that are aligned with intrinsic value towards social justice and equality, as well as environmental concerns,” says retail expert and QUT (Queensland University of Technology) Professor Gary Mortimer. AFL legend, Robert DiPierdomenico has also put his voice behind the BINS4Blokes campaign and openly shares his own experience with incontinence in order to grow public awareness for what is now a common condition and increase the availability of incontinence product disposal bins at major venues and shopping centres throughout Australia. Major venues already partnering with BINS4Blokes include Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, WA Cricket's WACA and Perth Airport. While this article is shared during World Continence Week to raise awareness for the need for local support, incontinence remains part of the daily life of many Australians and shopping centres are encouraged to implement BINS4Blokes at any time. https://lnkd.in/gqRBC8cH #BINS4blokes #WCW2024 #shoppingcentres #communitysupport #partnercontent
