We’ve achieved an Australian first by using rubber T-Lok road safety barriers on North East Link. ♻️ To date over 1600 car tyres, or 10 tonnes of rubber has been saved from landfill and reused for worker safety. So far nearly 230 crash barriers have rolled out at work sites in Yallambie and Bulleen, with another 59 on the way. Trent from Saferoads talks about the significance of this initiative. 6.5km tunnels linking Melbourne's freeway network.
About us
North East Link is the biggest ever investment in Melbourne’s north-east – changing the way people move around Melbourne. Victoria’s longest road tunnels will fix the missing link in our city’s freeway network, take 15,000 trucks off local roads a day and slash travel times by up to 35 minutes. We’ll also complete the Ring Road in Greensborough, overhaul the Eastern Freeway, build Melbourne’s first dedicated busway and the North East Trail – more than 34km of walking and cycling paths. North East Link will create thousands of jobs during construction and early operation. Keep up to date on the latest career opportunities with the North East Link Authority at careers.vic.gov.au Queries answered Mon-Fri 9am-5pm or via 24/7 hotline 1800 105 105.

Cutting through your feed ⚙️ Both cutterheads for our tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been lowered into place! Each cutterhead weighs over 400 tonnes and required a 550-tonne gantry crane to be used for the task. The finishing touches are now being put on TBM 1 so it can start the 6.5km journey from Watsonia to Bulleen soon.

The Major Road Projects Victoria environmental team has been working with CERES Urban Forestry to use as many trees as we can from the M80 Ring Road Completion for community projects. The timber logs will be stored for around 1 year at CERES for milling and drying, and what doesn’t get reused will go into the CERES social enterprise supply chain - supporting the valuable work that CERES does in the field of environmental education and its sustainable timber business CERES Fair Wood. “These types of trees have typically fallen under the waste stream and present some challenges to get people to re-use them. We are pleased that some of these beauties will be salvaged and turned into a higher value timber resource”. "Our ultimate aim in working with the M80 Ring Road and other major projects is to be able to demonstrate and share a model that will save thousands of urban trees from the mulcher, create circular economy jobs and supply a new source of sustainable timber for the building industry,” says Kate Sutton, CERES Urban Forestry Service Manager.
