The end of financial year traditionally means tax time, or end of financial year sales. While it’s a busy time for us, it is also a busy time for scammers. In June 2023, $38 million was lost to scams as reported by ACCC's Scamwatch. This highlights the need for extra vigilance as tax themed scam emails, SMS and calls increase at this time of year. Some of the scams that you may encounter could be: - Phishing scams. This type of social engineering scam involves an email or phone call in which scammers impersonate legitimate sources, like the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) or a financial institution, requesting personal or financial information. - Fake tax refund scams. Similar to phishing scams, you may come across a “smishing” scam orchestrated by cyber-criminals disguised as government agencies like the Australian National Audit Office or MyGov. Developments in technology, including artificial intelligence, facial recognition technology and the study and sharing of genetic data, as well as the use of analytics, social media, and our ever-present devices, all require us to more actively think about our privacy and how our personal information is protected.
