This new Alzheimer’s discovery could improve disease management. 🧠 A significant discovery by Australian scientists has the potential to improve the effectiveness of drugs currently used to manage cognitive decline in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, which is the second leading cause of death in the country. It’s estimated 250 Australians are diagnosed with dementia every day. The study, led by us, compared data from 475 people with varying levels of cognitive impairment. The scientists looked at the level of amyloid plaques in the brain, the atrophying or shrinking of the basal forebrain, and cognitive decline (memory and attention). Australian bird flu update. ⚠️ Outbreaks of bird flu detected in Australia so far have been H7 strains likely transferred from wild birds. The H5N1 strain, which has caused widespread damage overseas, has not yet hit our shores. Australia is not on the flight paths of large migratory water birds, such as ducks and geese, which travel long distances helping spread the H5N1 bird flu around the world. However, birds from Asia that came into contact with infected migratory birds could bring the virus from Australia, and it has recently been detected in Antarctica. Our Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness is working to both control the H7 strains and protect Australia from any potential arrival of H5 strains. 🗞️ | Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)

Accounting for nature in mining. ⛏️ We've partnered with CRC TiME and Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water on an Australian-first project: a suite of new resources to support the mining industry to adopt Natural Capital Accounting (NCA). Developed over 18 months, the resources are intended to build industry capability, understand the sector’s readiness to adopt NCA, and to enable consistent application and reporting of natural capital information over time. Dr Anthony O’Grady, our Senior Principal Research Scientist in the Natural Capital group, and Project Manager on this CRC TiME project, is excited by the potential opportunities for mining companies arising from these new reports. “We hope these reports provide a step in the right direction for Australia’s mining industry in generating a consistent, efficient and effective approach to NCA adoption and implementation," Anthony said.

Dung right! Our dung beetle research is helping Australian farms to clean up livestock dung, recycle nutrients and keep flies under control. We recently introduced three new dung beetle species to aid farmers, including two tunnellers and one roller species. Tunnellers bury dung underground from where it lands. Rollers break off bits of dung, shape them into balls, and roll them away to bury them! Discover more about our diligent dung beetle dynamos.

Unpacking quantum in qubits and pieces. 🧩 There's been a lot of talk about quantum computing lately. But it's quantum sensing that's revolutionising our world right now. Quantum sensing uses the ultra-sensitive nature of qubits to detect the tiniest fluctuations in magnetic and electric fields. It's transforming industries and research with its incredible precision and potential for low-cost, portable solutions. Our Postdoctoral Fellow in Quantum Biotechnology, Erin Grant, explains how the technology is shaping tomorrow. 👇 🗞️ | Cosmos
