About us

Code Like a Girl is a social enterprise providing women and non-binary folk with the confidence, tools, knowledge and support to enter and flourish in the world of code. It’s not just about women in tech, it’s about women building tech. We need diversity of experiences, perspectives and stories to build a world that is more empathetic, innovative and equal. As our lives become more and more technology-driven, it’s more important than ever to ensure that the technology being built serves each and every person. And the only way to guarantee our technology delivers is to ensure we have diversity within the coders creating that technology.

Robert Williams, a Black man, was wrongly arrested for shoplifting after being misidentified by facial recognition technology in 2018. Now, he has been awarded $300K from the city of Detroit. According to The Guardian, the software incorrectly matched Williams’ driver’s license photo to a suspect with a similar complexion, leading to the arrest. “My wife and young daughters had to watch helplessly as I was arrested for a crime I didn’t commit, and by the time I got home from jail, I had already missed my youngest losing her first tooth,” says Williams. “The scariest part is that what happened to me could have happened to anyone.” Sadly, Williams’ story is just one of many. This highlights the real-world impact of racial bias in tech. Studies show that facial recognition software is significantly less reliable for Black and Asian people, who are 10 to 100 times more likely to be misidentified by this technology than their white counterparts according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The institute also found that these systems’ algorithms struggled to distinguish between facial structures and darker skin tones. There are real consequences to algorithmic bias, and the only way to truly mitigate these harms is to ensure that those developing AI technology prioritize the needs of all communities. That’s why we champion diversity, equity, and inclusion at Girls Who Code. We all deserve to have a tech industry that reflects our increasingly diverse world. https://bit.ly/3WfNOyt

    Junior Software Engineer | Full-stack Developer | Front-end Developer

As a tech explorer transitioning from administration and customer service to software engineering, I've encountered many wonderful people along my journey. They have been willing to listen, share their experiences, offer career advice, organise events, and even provide potential job opportunities. I never imagined how amazing the IT industry could be in this regard. I met Vesa Termonen, who was so approachable, and we had a delightful coffee chat that lasted an entire afternoon. Branden Dunbar volunteered to conduct a mock interview with me through Code Like a Girl, which was incredibly helpful. I attended TechWalking, organised by Yana Martens, who also frequently tags me in events that could help me land a job or expand my network. I met Stephanie Yacoubian, a professional lead recruiter who shares a lot of information about the current job market. I also met Corey Rodgers from General Assembly Australia, who conducted a mock tech interview with me individually. And more... LinkedIn has enabled me to connect with people I never knew before. I was fortunate to speak with Carol Yingpei Liu via LinkedIn messages and then meet her in person yesterday. It was an amazing experience to receive professional advice and career guidance from someone with a wealth of industry experience. Our long conversation brought me a lot of motivation and confidence. I know this journey is a long one, and I've only just started. It will continue, and I will keep growing. I hope that one day I will be strong enough to share my experiences and advice with others who are pursuing similar paths. I look forward to giving back and helping those who, like me, are finding their way in this field.

We were thrilled to see Deadly Coders recognised at last week’s #TechDiversity Awards in Melbourne! 🌟 In honour of Reconciliation Week, we wanted to highlight the incredible impact this organisation has on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary and secondary students across Australia. We’re driven everyday to see a tech industry that’s as rich and diverse as our society. We’re grateful to organisations like Deadly Coders for the impact and change they make towards this goal.
