    $\begingroup$ Venus has more gravity and active volcanos, if I am not mistaken. In a sort of ironic way, the thick atmosphere actually ends up helping reduce its loss. The upper part ionizes due to the ionizing radiation from the Sun and solar wind, which creates an induced ionosphere.
