$\begingroup$ Have you had a chance to check this yet? My guess is that the difference is partly because pair production can easily become a runaway process, as described in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… whereas with photodisintegration some of the energy lost to photodisintegration is recovered in further fusion reactions. $\endgroup$
