  • $\begingroup$ Astronomy is still critical for navigation. Space vehicles are typically outfitted with star trackers so as to know the direction in which the vehicles are pointing. Many vehicles are outfitted with three or more star trackers because just as one should "never go to sea with two chronometers; take one or three", a vehicle should never go to space with two star trackers. Even three aren't quite enough. Four are needed to protect against Byzantine faults. $\endgroup$ Commented Aug 2, 2021 at 13:22
