    This was exactly what the problem was for me and doing a restart from windows to boot into linux rather than a shutdown is a great way to verify that this is the correct solution for you. The ntfsfix solution below did not work for me, whereas this one did.

    restarting windows instead of shuting-down solved problem also for me. ntfs-3g flag remove_hiberfile did not help.

  • Thanks, restarting was good advice! I was trying to mount the disk in order to reset a forgotten password, so of course I can't change any Windows fast boot settings.
