    I very much appreciate this reply, however for now I am going to leave things as they are under the "if it ain't broke..." theory. I have no need for split DNS and things like routing domains are not something I need either. The system this runs on serves one purpose only, which is to act as a VPN client. All local traffic is exchanged using IPv4 private addresses (192.168.1.x) so no DNS resolution there. But that said, I am going to save your very informative reply in case my needs ever change, and I am sure it will be quite helpful to others who have slightly different DNS routing needs.
