Data show that the presence of women in quantum science is affected by a number of detriments and their percentage decreases even further for higher positions. Beyond data, from our shared personal experiences as female tenured quantum physics professors, we believe that the current model of scientific leadership, funding, and authority fails to represent many of us. It is time for a real change that calls for a different kind of force and for the participation of everyone. Women for quantum calls for a joint effort and aims with this initiative to contribute to such a transformation.

The exploitation of the full structure of multimode light fields enables compelling capabilities in many fields including classical and quantum information science. We exploit data-encoding on the optical phase of the pulses of a femtosecond laser source for a photonic implementation of a reservoir computing protocol. Rather than intensity detection, data-reading is done via homodyne detection that accesses combinations of amplitude and phase of the field. Numerical and experimental results on NARMA tasks and laser dynamic predictions are shown. We discuss perspectives for quantum enhanced protocols.

Quantum Reservoir Computing (QRC) exploits the information processing capabilities of quantum systems to solve non-trivial temporal tasks, improving over their classical counterparts. Recent progress has shown the potential of QRC exploiting the enlarged Hilbert space, but real-time processing and the achievement of a quantum advantage with efficient use of resources are prominent challenges towards viable experimental realizations. In this work, we propose a photonic platform suitable for real-time QRC based on a physical ensemble of reservoirs in the form of identical optical pulses recirculating through a closed loop. While ideal operation achieves maximum capacities, statistical noise is shown to undermine a quantum advantage. We propose a strategy to overcome this limitation and sustain the QRC performance when the size of the system is scaled up. The platform is conceived for experimental implementations to be viable with current technology.

Nonlocal feedback in nonlinear systems
Authors:
Roberta Zambrini,

Abstract:
A shifted or misaligned feedback loop gives rise to a two-point nonlocality that is the spatial analog of a temporal delay. Important consequences of this nonlocal coupling have been found both in diffusive and in diffractive systems, and include convective instabilities, independent tuning of phase and group velocities, as well as amplification, chirping and even splitting of localized perturbati…

Important consequences of this nonlocal coupling have been found both in diffusive and in diffractive systems, and include convective instabilities, independent tuning of phase and group velocities, as well as amplification, chirping and even splitting of localized perturbations. Analytical predictions about these nonlocal systems as well as their spatio-temporal dynamics are discussed in one and two transverse dimensions and in presence of noise.

We put forward a method that allows the experimental determination of the entire spatial mode spectrum of any arbitrary monochromatic wave field in a plane normal to its propagation direction. For coherent optical fields, our spatial spectrum analyzer can be implemented with a small number of benchmark refractive elements embedded in a single Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We detail an efficient setup for measuring in the Hermite-Gaussian mode basis. Our scheme should also be feasible in the context of atom optics for analyzing the spatial profiles of macroscopic matter waves.

We consider a large class of optical cavities and gain media with an off-axis external feedback which introduces a two-point nonlocality. This nonlocality moves the lasing threshold and opens large windows of control parameters where weak light spots can be strongly amplified while the background radiation remains very low. Furthermore, transverse phase and group velocities of a signal can be independently tuned and this enables to steer it non mechanically, to control its spatial chirping and to split it into two counter-propagating ones.
