Abstract:
We find the turbulent energy spectrum of weakly interacting 2D internal gravity waves without relying on the hydrostatic approximation. This spectrum is an exact solution of the kinetic equation after the shear modes are removed, and it agrees with the oceanic Garrett-Munk spectrum for frequencies large compared to the Coriolis frequency and vertical scales small compared to the depth of the ocean…

We find the turbulent energy spectrum of weakly interacting 2D internal gravity waves without relying on the hydrostatic approximation. This spectrum is an exact solution of the kinetic equation after the shear modes are removed, and it agrees with the oceanic Garrett-Munk spectrum for frequencies large compared to the Coriolis frequency and vertical scales small compared to the depth of the ocean. Among a continuous family of solutions to the kinetic equation, we show that the turbulent solution is the special solution with non zero angular dependent radial flux. Our solution provides an interesting insight of how turbulent energy cascade proceeds in anisotropic systems - similarly to isotropic turbulence it is self-similar in scale, but its angular part is peaked along the curve of vanishing frequency.

We highlight a non-canonical yet natural choice of variables for an efficient derivation of a kinetic equation for the energy density in non-isotropic systems, including internal gravity waves on a vertical plane, inertial and Rossby waves. The existence of a second quadratic invariant simplifies the kinetic equation and leads to extra conservation laws for resonant interactions. We analytically determine the scaling of the radial turbulent energy spectrum. Our findings suggest the existence of an inverse energy cascade of internal gravity waves, from small to large scales, in practically relevant scenarios.

Starting from the two-dimensional Boussinesq equation without rotation, we derive a kinetic equation for weak interaction of internal waves using non-canonical variables. We follow a formalism introduced by P. Ripa in the 80's. The advantage of this formalism is that it describes the system in terms of the natural linear eigenfunctions of eastward and westward propagating internal waves. Using properties of orthogonality of the eigenfunctions with respect to a (pseudo) metric set by the energy we can write non perturbative theory for the interaction of waves given in terms of the expansion amplitudes. The evolution is controlled by a system of equations, with quadratic nonlinearity, which is an exact representation of the original model equations. The dynamics is constrained by the conservation of energy and pseudo-momentum, which can be written simply as a linear combination of the squared absolute value of the amplitudes. The possibility of a generalization of the Fjortoft's argument to internal gravity waves and observation of a non trivial double cascade of energy and pseudo-momentum is discussed.

Abstract:
We develop a theory of turbulence of weak random gravity waves on surface of deep water in which the main nonlinear process at high-frequency part of the spectrum is a nonlocal interaction with a strong low-frequency component. The latter component, which we call ``condensate", may appear in the system due to, e.g., the finite size effects which lead to an energy stagnation at waves whose waveleng…

We develop a theory of turbulence of weak random gravity waves on surface of deep water in which the main nonlinear process at high-frequency part of the spectrum is a nonlocal interaction with a strong low-frequency component. The latter component, which we call ``condensate", may appear in the system due to, e.g., the finite size effects which lead to an energy stagnation at waves whose wavelength is comparable to the size of the retaining flume. Our theory assumes the form of a linear spectral diffusion equation. We find a scaling solution of this equation and propose it as a possible explanation of recent numerical results for the gravity wave spectrum.

The present work considers systems whose dynamics are governed by the nonlinear interactions among groups of 6 nonlinear waves, such as those described by the unforced quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Specific parameter regimes in which ensemble-averaged dynamics of such systems with finite size are accurately described by a wave kinetic equation, as used in wave turbulence theory, are theoretically predicted. In addition, the underlying reasons that the wave kinetic equation may be a poor predictor of wave dynamics outside these regimes are also discussed. These theoretical predictions are directly verified by comparing ensemble averages of solutions to the dynamical equation with corresponding solutions of the wave kinetic equation.
