We study the modulation of fast magnetosonic waves (MSWs) in rotating inhomogeneous low-$β$ magnetoplasmas with the effects of gravitation and the Coriolis force. By employing the standard multiple-scale reductive perturbation technique (RPT), we derive a nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation that governs the evolution of slowly varying MSW envelopes. The fast MSW becomes dispersive by the effects of the Coriolis force in the fluid motion, and the magnetic field and density inhomogeneity effects favor the Jeans instability in self-gravitating plasmas in a larger domain of the wave number ($k$, below the Jeans critical wave number, $k_J$) than homogeneous plasmas. The relative influence of the Jeans frequency ($ω_J$, associated with the gravitational force) and the angular frequency ($Ω_0$, relating to the Coriolis force) on the Jeans carrier MSW mode and the modulational instability (MI) of the MSW envelope is studied. We show that the MSW envelope (corresponding to the unstable carrier Jeans mode with $ω_J>2Ω_0$ and $k<k_J$) is always unstable against the plane wave perturbation with no cut-offs for growth rates. In contrast, the stable Jeans mode with $ω_J>2Ω_0$ but $k>k_J$ manifests either modulational stability or MI having a finite growth rate before being cut off. We find an enhancement of the MI growth rate by the influence of magnetic field or density inhomogeneity. The case with constant gravity force (other than the self-gravity) perpendicular to the magnetic field is also briefly discussed to show that the fast magnetosonic carrier mode is always unstable, giving MI of slowly varying envelopes with no cut-offs for the growth rates. Possible applications of MI in solar plasmas, such as those in the X-ray corona, are also briefly discussed.

We study the oblique propagation of weakly nonlinear dust-ion-acoustic (DIA) solitary waves (SWs) and shocks in collisional magnetized nonthermal dusty plasmas that are relevant in laboratory and space (Saturn's E-ring) environments. We consider plasmas to be composed of $q$-nonextensive hot electrons, thermal positive ions, and immobile negatively charged dust grains immersed in a static magnetic field and take into account the effects of ion creation (source), and ion loss (sink), ion-neutral and ion-dust collisions, anisotropic ion pressure and dust-charge fluctuations on the evolution of small-amplitude SWs and shocks. The ion-neutral collision enhancement equilibrium dust-charge number is self-consistently determined using Newton's Raphson method. We found that in laboratory dusty plasmas with adiabatic dust-charge variation [i.e., when the dust charging frequency ($ν_{\rm{ch}}$) is much higher than the dust-plasma oscillation frequency ($ω_{\rm{pd}}$)], the DIA solitary waves (DIASWs) get damped by the effects of the ion-dust and ion-neutral collisions, whereas the ion creation and ion loss leads to the amplification of solitary waves, and they appear as only compressive types with positive potential. On the other hand, in Saturn's E-ring plasmas, where the collisional and ion creation or ion loss effects are insignificant, the non-adiabaticity of dust-charge variation can give rise to the evolution of either damped DIASWs or DIA shocks, depending on the smallness of the ratios $ν_{\rm{ch}}/ω_{\rm{pd}}$ or $ω_{\rm{pd}}/ν_{\rm{ch}}$, respectively. Furthermore, two critical values of the nonextensive parameter $q$ exist, below (or above) which, the DIASWs and shocks can appear as rarefactive (or compressive) types. The characteristics of DIASWs and shocks are also analyzed numerically for parameters relevant to the laboratory and Saturn's E-ring plasmas.

Starting from a set of relativistic fluid equations for degenerate electrons at finite temperature, coupled to the EM wave equation and using the multiple scale perturbation expansion scheme, a one-dimensional nonlinear Sch{ö}dinger (NLS) equation is derived, which describes the evolution of slowly varying amplitudes of EM wave envelopes. Then we study the MI of the latter in two different regimes, namely $β_e<1$ and $β_e>1$. Like unmagnetized classical cold plasmas, the modulated EM envelope is always unstable in the region $β_e>4$. However, for $β_e\lesssim1$ and $1<β_e<4$, the wave can be stable or unstable depending on the values of the EM wave frequency, $ω$ and the parameter $ξ_e$. We also obtain the instability growth rate for the modulated wave and find a significant reduction by increasing the values of either $β_e$ or $ξ_e$. Finally, we present the profiles of the traveling EM waves in the form of bright (envelope pulses) and dark (voids) solitons, as well as the profiles (other than traveling waves) of the Kuznetsov-Ma breather, the Akhmediev breather, and the Peregrine solitons as EM rogue (freak) waves, and discuss their characteristics in the regimes of $β_e\lesssim1$ and $β_e>1$.

The theory of ion-acoustic solitons in nonrelativistic fully degenerate plasmas and nonrelativistic and ultra-relativistic degenerate plasmas at low temperatures is known. We consider a multi-component relativistic degenerate electron-positron-ion plasma at finite temperatures. Specifically, we focus on the intermediate region where the particle's Fermi energy $(k_BT_F)$ slightly differs from the thermal energy $(k_BT)$ and the rest mass energy $(mc^2)$, i.e., $k_BT_F>k_BT\sim mc^2$ and the normalized chemical energy ($ξ=μ/k_BT$) is positive and finite. Two different parameter regimes with $β\equiv k_BT/mc^2<1$ and $β>1$, relevant for astrophysical plasmas, are defined, and the existence of small amplitude ion-acoustic solitons in these regimes are studied, including the critical cases where the known KdV (Korteweg-de Vries) theory fails. We show that while the solitons with both the positive (compressive) and negative (rarefactive) potentials coexist in the case of $β<1$, only compressive solitons can exist in the other regime $(β>1)$. Furthermore, while the rarefactive solitons within the parameter domains of $β$ and $ξ$ can evolve with increasing amplitude and hence increasing energy, the energy of compressive solitons reaches a steady state.

The nonlinear dynamics of circularly polarized dispersive Alfv{é}n wave (AW) envelopes coupled to the driven ion sound waves of plasma slow response is studied in a uniform magnetoplasma. By restricting the wave dynamics to a few number of harmonic modes, a low-dimensional dynamical model is proposed to describe the nonlinear wave-wave interactions. It is found that two subintervals of the wave number of modulation $k$ of AW envelope exists, namely $(3/4)k_c<k<k_c$ and $0<k<(3/4)k_c$, where $k_c$ is the critical value of $k$ below which the modulational instability (MI) occurs. In the former, where the MI growth rate is low, the periodic and/or quasi-periodic states are shown to occur, whereas the latter, where the MI growth is high, brings about the chaotic states. The existence of these states is established by the analyses of Lyapunov exponent spectra together with the bifurcation diagram and phase-space portraits of dynamical variables. Furthermore, the complexities of chaotic phase spaces in the nonlinear motion are measured by the estimations of the correlation dimension (CD) as well as the approximate entropy (ApEn), and compared with those for the known H{é}non map and the Lorenz system in which a good qualitative agreement is noted. The chaotic motion thus predicted in a low-dimensional model can be a prerequisite for the onset of Alfv{é}nic wave turbulence to be observed in a higher dimensional model that and is relevant in the Earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere.

The generation of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and their instabilities are studied in galactic gaseous rotating plasmas with the effects of the magnetic field, the self gravity, the diffusion-convection of cosmic rays as well as the gas and cosmic-ray pressures. The coupling of the Jeans, Alfv{é}n and magnetosonic waves, and the conditions of damping or instability are studied in three different cases, namely when the propagation direction is perpendicular, parallel and oblique to the static magnetic field, and are shown to be significantly modified by the effects of the Coriolis force due to the rotation of cosmic fluids and the cosmic-ray diffusion. The coupled modes can be damped or anti-damped depending on the wave number is above or below the Jeans critical wave number that is reduced by the effects of the Coriolis force and the cosmic-ray pressure. It is found that the deviation of the axis of rotation from the direction of the static magnetic field gives rise to the coupling between the Alfv{é}n wave and the classical Jeans mode which otherwise results into the modified slow and fast Alfv{é}n waves as well as the modified classical Jeans modes. Furthermore, due to the effects of the cosmic rays diffusion, there appears a new wave mode (may be called the fast Jeans mode) in the intermediate frequency regimes of the slow and fast Alfv{é}n waves, which seems to be dispersionless in the long-wavelength propagation and has a lower growth rate of instability in the high density regimes of galaxies. The dispersion properties and the instabilities of different kinds of MHD waves reported here can play pivotal roles in the formation of various galactic structures at different length scales.

The influence of neutrino flavor oscillations on the propagation of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and instabilities is studied in neutrino-beam driven magnetoplasmas. Using the neutrino MHD model, a general dispersion relation is derived which manifests the resonant interactions of MHD waves, not only with the neutrino beam, but also with the neutrino flavor oscillations. It is found that the latter contribute to the wave dispersion and enhance the magnitude of the instability of oblique magnetosonic waves. However, the shear-Alfv{é}n wave remains unaffected by the neutrino beam and neutrino flavor oscillations. Such an enhancement of the magnitude of the instability of magnetosonic waves can be significant for relatively long-wavelength perturbations in the regimes of high neutrino number density and/or strong magnetic field, giving a convincing mechanism for type-II core-collapse supernova explosion.

The evolution of electromagnetic (EM) solitons due to nonlinear coupling of circularly polarized intense laser pulses with low-frequency electron-acoustic perturbations is studied in relativistic degenerate dense astrophysical plasmas with two groups of electrons: a sparse population of classical relativistic electrons and a dense population of relativistic degenerate electron gas. Different forms of localized stationary solutions are obtained and their properties are analyzed. Using the Vakhitov-Kolokolov stability criterion, the conditions for the existence and stability of a moving EM soliton are also studied. It is noted that the stable and unstable regions shift around the plane of soliton eigenfrequency and the soliton velocity due to the effects of relativistic degeneracy, the fraction of classical to degenerate electrons and the EM wave frequency. Furthermore, while the standing solitons exhibit stable profiles for a longer time, the moving solitons, however, can be stable or unstable depending on the degree of electron degeneracy, the soliton eigenfrequency and the soliton velocity. The latter with an enhanced value can eventually lead to a soliton collapse. The results should be useful for understanding the formation of solitons in the coupling of highly intense laser pulses with slow response of degenerate dense plasmas in the next generation laser-plasma interaction experiments as well as the novel features of $x$-ray and $γ$-ray pulses that originate from compact astrophysical objects.

The formation of thermoacoustic shocks is revealed in a fluid complex plasma. The thermoacoustic wave mode can be damped (or anti-damped) when the contribution from the thermoacoustic interaction is lower (or higher) than that due to the particle collision and/or the kinematic viscosity. In the nonlinear regime, the thermoacoustic wave, propagating with the acoustic speed, can evolve into small amplitude shocks whose dynamics is governed by the Bateman-Burgers equation with nonlocal nonlinearity. The latter can cause the shock fronts to be stable (or unstable) depending on the collision frequency remains below (or above) a critical value and the thermal feedback is positive. The existence of different kinds of shocks and their characteristics are analyzed with the system parameters that characterize the thermal feedback, thermal diffusion, heat capacity per fluid particle, the particle collision and the fluid viscosity. Starting from a set of fluid equations for classical ions and Fermi-Dirac distribution for degenerate electrons and positrons, a linear dispersion relation for IA waves is derived. It is seen that the wave dispersion is significantly modified due to the presence of positron species and the effects of finite temperature degeneracy of electrons and positrons. In the nonlinear regime, the Sagdeev's pseudopotential approach is employed to study the existence domain and the evolution of nonlinear IA-SWs in terms of the parameters that are associated with the finite temperature degeneracy, the background number densities, and the thermal energies of electrons and positrons. The nonlinear propagation of internal gravity waves in the weakly ionized, incompressible Earth's ionosphere is studied using the fluid theory approach. Previous theory in the literature is advanced by the effects of the terrestrial inhomogeneous magnetic field embedded in weakly ionized ionospheric layers ranging in altitude from about $50$ to $500$ km. It is shown that the ionospheric conducting fluids can support the formation of solitary dipolar vortices (or modons). Both analytical and numerical solutions of the latter are obtained and analyzed. It is found that in absence of the Pedersen conductivity, different vortex structures with different space localization can be formed which can move with the supersonic velocity without any energy loss. However, its presence can cause the amplitude of the solitary vortices to decay with time and the vortex structure can completely disappear owing to the energy loss. Such energy loss can be delayed, i.e., the vortex structure can prevail for relatively a longer time if the nonlinear effects associated with either the stream function or the density variation become significantly higher than the dissipation due to the Pedersen conductivity. The main characteristic dynamic parameters are also defined which are in good correlation with the existing experimental data.

In the linear limit, the coupling of IAWs and drift waves by the density inhomogeneity is shown to produce a new wave mode which typically depends on the density gradient, the rotational frequency and the spectral indexes of superthermal electrons. In the nonlinear regime, an evolution equation for the drift IAWs is derived by the dispersion approach, and using the Jacobi elliptic function expansion technique its exact solitary and periodic wave solutions (namely, cnoidal and dnoidal) are also obtained. The properties of these solutions are numerically examined and it is found that they are significantly modified by the effects of the background density gradient, the superthermality of electrons and the Coriolis force associated with the rotational motion of ions.

The linear and nonlinear theories of electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) are studied in a partially degenerate quantum plasma with two-temperature electrons and stationary ions. The initial equilibrium of electrons is assumed to be given by the Fermi-Dirac distribution at finite temperature. By employing the multi-scale asymptotic expansion technique to the one-dimensional Wigner-Moyal and Poisson equations, it is shown that the effects of multi-plasmon resonances lead to a modified complex Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with a new nonlocal nonlinearity. Besides giving rise to a nonlocal nonlinear term, the wave-particle resonance also modifies the local nonlinear coupling coefficient of the KdV equation. The latter is shown to conserve the number of particles, however, the wave energy decays with time. A careful analysis shows that the two-plasmon resonance is the dominant mechanism for nonlinear Landau damping of EAWs. An approximate soliton solution of the KdV equation is also obtained, and it is shown that the nonlinear Landau damping causes the wave amplitude to decay slowly with time compared to the classical theory.

The dynamical behaviors of electromagnetic (EM) solitons formed due to nonlinear interaction of linearly polarized intense laser light and relativistic degenerate plasmas are studied. In the slow motion approximation of relativistic dynamics, the evolution of weakly nonlinear EM envelope is described by the generalized nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (GNLS) equation with local and nonlocal nonlinearities. Using the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criteria, the stability of an EM soliton solution of the GNLS equation is studied. Different stable and unstable regions are demonstrated with the effects of soliton velocity, soliton eigenfrequency, as well as the degeneracy parameter $R=p_{Fe}/m_ec$, where $p_{Fe}$ is the Fermi momentum and $m_e$ the electron mass, and $c$ is the speed of light in vacuum. It is found that the stability region shifts to an unstable one and is significantly reduced as one enters from the regimes of weakly relativistic $(R\ll1)$ to ultrarelativistic $(R\gg1)$ degeneracy of electrons. The analytically predicted results are in good agreement with the simulation results of the GNLS equation. It is shown that the standing EM soliton solutions are stable. However, the moving solitons can be stable or unstable depending on the values of soliton velocity, the eigenfrequency or the degeneracy parameter. The latter with strong degeneracy $(R>1)$ can eventually lead to soliton collapse.

Nonlinear propagation of purely stationary large amplitude electromagnetic (EM) solitary waves in a magnetized electron-positron (EP) plasma is studied using a fully relativistic two-fluid hydrodynamic model which accounts for physical regimes of both weakly relativistic $(P\ll nmc^2)$ and ultrarelativistic $(P\gg nmc^2)$ random thermal energies. Here, $P$ is the thermal pressure, $n$ the number density and $m$ the mass of a particle, and $c$ is the speed of light in vacuum. Previous theory in the literature [Phys. Plasmas \textbf{11}, 3078 (2004)] is advanced and generalized by the relativistic thermal motion of both electrons and positrons. While both the sub-Alfv{é}nic and super-Alfv{é}nic solitons coexist in the weakly relativistic regime, the ultrarelativistic EP plasmas in contrast support only the sub-Alfv{é}nic solitons. Different limits of the Mach numbers and soliton amplitudes are also examined in these two physical regimes.

The theory of surface electromagnetic waves (SEMWs) propagating at optical frequencies along the interface of an isotropic noble metal [e.g., gold (Au)] and a uniaxial crystal [e.g., Rutile (TiO$_2$)] is revisited with the Drude-Lorentz (DL) model for the complex dielectric material permittivity $(ε_p)$. The latter accounts for the contributions of both the \textit{intraband} transitions of the free electrons and the multiple \textit{interband} transitions of the bound electrons in metals. The propagation characteristics of the wave vectors and wave frequency of SEMWs, the hybridization factors, i.e., the amplitude ratios between the transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) modes in the isotropic metal, and between the ordinary and extraordinary modes in the uniaxial substrate are studied numerically. It is found that the results are significantly modified from those with the Drude model for $ε_p$, especially in the short-wavelength spectra ($λ\lesssim500$ nm) and with a small deviation of the orientation of the optical axis. The excitation of such SEMWs can have novel applications in transportation of EM signals in a specified direction at optical frequencies ($\sim $ PHz).

The nonlinear interaction of intense linearly polarized electromagnetic waves (EMWs) with longitudinal electron density perturbations is revisited in relativistic degenerate plasmas. The nonlinear dynamics of the EMWs and the longitudinal field, driven by the EMW ponderomotive force, is governed by a coupled set of nonlinear partial differential equations. A numerical simulation of these coupled equations reveals that the generation of wakefields is possible in weakly relativistic degenerate plasmas with $R_0\equiv p_F/mc\ll1$ and $v_g/c\sim1$, where $p_F$ is the Fermi momentum, $m$ is the mass of electrons, $c$ is the speed of light in vacuum, and $v_g$ is the EMW group velocity. However, when the ratio $v_g/c$ is reduced to $\sim0.1$, the wakefield generation is suppressed, instead the longitudinal fields get localized to form soliton-like structures. On the other hand, in the regimes of moderate $(R_0\lesssim1)$ or strong relativistic degeneracy $(R_0>1)$ with $v_g/c\sim0.1$, only the EM solitons can be formed.

Starting from a set of fluid equations coupled to the Maxwell's equations, we derive a coupled set of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) which govern the evolution of KAW envelopes in the plasma. The modulational instability (MI) of such KAW envelopes is then studied by a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation derived from the coupled PDEs. It is shown that the KAWs can evolve into bright envelope solitons, or can undergo damping depending on whether the characteristic ratio $(α)$ of the Alfv{é}n to ion-acoustic (IA) speeds remains above or below a critical value. The parameter $α$ is also found to shift the MI domains around the $k_xk_z$ plane, where $k_x~(k_z)$ is the KAW number perpendicular (parallel) to the external magnetic field. The growth rate of MI, as well as the frequency shift and the energy transfer rate, are obtained and analyzed. The results can be useful for understanding the existence and formation of bright and dark envelope solitons, or damping of KAW envelopes in space plasmas, e.g., interplanetary space, solar winds etc.

The nonlinear propagation of small amplitude ion acoustic solitary wave in relativistic degenerate magneto plasma in presence of ion beam is investigated in detail. The nonlinear equations describing the evolution of solitary wave in presence of relativistic non-degenerate magnetized positive ions and ion beams including magnetized degenerate relativistic electrons are derived in terms of Zakharov-Kuznetsov (Z-K) equation for such plasma systems. The ion beams which are ubiquitous ingredient in such plasma systems, are found to have a decisive role in the propagation of solitary wave in such highly dense plasma system. The conditions of wave, propagating with typical solitonic characteristics are examined and discussed in detail under suitable conditions of different physical parameter. Both subsonic and supersonic wave can propagate in such plasmas bearing different characteristics under different physical situations. A detailed analysis of waves propagating in subsonic and/or supersonic regime is carried out. The ion beam concentrations, magnetic field as well as ion beam streaming velocity is found to play a momentous role on the control of the amplitude and width of small amplitude perturbation both in weakly(or non-relativistic) and relativistic plasmas.

The collective excitation of surface plasmons in a massless Dirac plasma (e.g., graphene) half-space (bounded by air) is investigated using a relativistic quantum fluid model. The unique features of such surface waves are discussed and compared with those in a Fermi plasma. It is found that in contrast to Fermi plasmas, the long-wavelength surface plasmon frequency $(ω)$ in massless Dirac plasmas is explicitly nonclassical, i.e., $ω\propto1/\sqrt{\hbar}$, where $h=2π\hbar$ is the Planck's constant. Besides some apparent similarities between the surface plasmon frequencies in massless Dirac plasmas and Fermi plasmas, several notable differences are also found and discussed. Our findings elucidate the properties of surface plasmons that may propagate in degenerate plasmas where the relativistic and quantum effects play a vital role.

We study the dispersion properties of surface plasmon oscillations in a semi-bounded semiconductor plasma with the effects of the Coulomb exchange force associated with the spin polarization of electrons and holes as well as the effects of the Fermi degenerate pressure and the quantum Bohm potential. Starting from a quantum hydrodynamic (QHD) model coupled to the Poisson equation, we derive the general dispersion relation for surface plasma waves. Previous results in this context are recovered. The dispersion properties of the surface waves are analyzed in some particular cases of interest and the relative influence of the quantum forces on these waves are also studied for a nano-sized GaAs semiconductor plasma. It is found that the Coulomb exchange effects significantly modify the behaviors of the surface plasmon waves. The present results are applicable to understand the propagation characteristics of surface waves in solid density plasmas.

We study the nonlinear wave modulation of Langmuir waves (LWs) in a fully degenerate plasma. Using the Wigner-Moyal equation coupled to the Poisson equation and the multiple scale expansion technique, a modified nonlocal nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation is derived which governs the evolution of LW envelopes in degenerate plasmas. The nonlocal nonlinearity in the NLS equation appears due to the group velocity and multi-plasmon resonances, i.e., resonances induced by the simultaneous particle absorption of multiple wave quanta. We focus on the regime where the resonant velocity of electrons is larger than the Fermi velocity and thereby the linear Landau damping is forbidden. As a result, the nonlinear wave-particle resonances due to the group velocity and multi-plasmon processes are the dominant mechanisms for wave-particle interaction. It is found that in contrast to classical or semiclassical plasmas, the group velocity resonance does not necessarily give rise the wave damping in the strong quantum regime where $ \hbar k\sim mv_{F}$ with $\hbar$ denoting the reduced Planck's constant, $m$ the electron mass and $v_F$ the Fermi velocity, however, the three-plasmon process plays a dominant role in the nonlinear Landau damping of wave envelopes. In this regime, the decay rate of the wave amplitude is also found to be higher compared to that in the modest quantum regime where the multi-plasmon effects are forbidden.

Here, we consider a bidirectional master-slave configuration or two-way coupling with two VCSELs. The latter are shown to exhibit hyperchaos and synchronization with a high level of similarity between their emission characteristics. The coupled VCSELs are then used as a transmitter and a receiver for the communication of image or data. Furthermore, we propose a modified chaos-based image encryption algorithm using the pixel- and bit-level permutations which provides robust, faster and simpler encryption/decryption compared to many other chaos-based cryptosystems. The performances of the new cryptosystem are analyzed and compared with a recently developed scheme [Opt. Las. Eng. 90 (2017) 238-246]. The security analysis and some statistical investigations show that the proposed cryptosystem is resistant to various types of attacks and is efficient for secure communications in nonlinear optical media.

Starting from a set of classical and semiclassical Vlasov equations for ions and electrons, coupled to the Poisson equation, we derive a modified (by the particle dispersion) Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation which governs the evolution of IAWs with the effects of wave-particle resonance. It is found that in contrast to the classical results, the nonlinear IAW speed $(λ)$ and the linear Landau damping rate $(γ)$ are no longer constants, but can vary with the wave number $(k)$ due to the quantum particle dispersion. The effects of the quantum parameter $H$ (the ratio of the plasmon energy to the thermal energy) and the electron to ion temperature ratio $(T)$ on the profiles of $λ$, $γ$ and the solitary wave amplitude are also studied. A macroscopic quantum magnetohydrodynamic (QMHD) model is used to include the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential, the pressure-like spin force, the exchange and correlation force of electrons, as well as the dissipative force due to the kinematic viscosity of ions and the magnetic diffusivity. The effects of these forces on the properties of arbitrary amplitude MSWs are examined numerically. It is found that the contribution from the exchange-correlation force appears to be dominant over those from the pressure gradient and the other similar quantum forces, and it results into a transition from monotonic to oscillatory shocks in presence of either the ion kinematic viscosity or the magnetic diffusivity.

The modulational instability (MI) and the evolution of weakly nonlinear two-dimensional (2D) Langmuir wave (LW) packets are studied in an unmagnetized collisionless plasma with weakly relativistic electron flow. By using a 2D self-consistent relativistic fluid model and employing the standard multiple-scale technique, a coupled set of Davey-Stewartson (DS)-like equations is derived which governs the slow modulation and the evolution of LW packets in relativistic plasmas. It is found that the relativistic effects favor the instability of LW envelopes in the kθ plane, where k is the wave number and θ the angle of modulation. It is also found that as the electron thermal velocity or θ increases, the growth rate of MI increases with cutoffs at higher wave numbers of modulation. Furthermore, in the nonlinear evolution of the DS-like equations, it is seen that with an effect of the relativistic flow, a Gaussian wave beam collapses in a finite time, and the collapse can be arrested when the effect of the thermal pressure or the relativistic flow is slightly relaxed. The present results may be useful to the MI and the formation of localized LW envelopes in cosmic plasmas with a relativistic flow of electrons.

The amplitude modulation of three dimensional (3D) dust ion-acoustic wave (DIAW) packets is studied in a collisionless magnetized plasma with inertial positive ions, superthermal electrons and negatively charged immobile dust grains. By using the reductive perturbation technique, a 3D-nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation is derived, which governs the slow modulation of DIAW packets. The latter are found to be stable in the low-frequency $(ω<ω_c)$ regime, whereas they are unstable for $ω>ω_c$, and the modulational instability (MI) is related to the modulational obliqueness $(θ)$. Here, $ω~(ω_c)$ is the nondimensional wave (ion-cyclotron) frequency. It is shown that the superthermal parameter $κ$, the frequency $ω_c$ as well as the charged dust impurity $(0<μ<1)$ shift the MI domains around the $ω-θ$ plane, where $μ$ is the ratio of electron to ion number densities. Furthermore, it is found that the decay rate of instability is quenched by the superthermal parameter $κ$ with cut-offs at lower wave number of modulation ($K$), however, it can be higher (lower) with increasing values of $μ$ ($ω_c$) having cut-offs at higher values of $K$.

The nonlinear theory of amplitude modulation of electrostatic wave envelopes in a collisionless electron-positron (EP) pair plasma is studied by using a set of Vlasov-Poisson equations in the context of Tsallis' $q$-nonextensive statistics. In particular, the previous linear theory of Langmuir oscillations in EP plasmas [Phys. Rev. E {\bf87}, 053112 (2013)] is rectified and modified. Applying the multiple scale technique (MST), it is shown that the evolution of electrostatic wave envelopes is governed by a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation with a nonlocal nonlinear term $\propto {\cal{P}}\int|φ(ξ',τ)|^2dξ'φ/(ξ-ξ') $ [where ${\cal P}$ denotes the Cauchy principal value, $φ$ is the small-amplitude electrostatic (complex) potential, and $ξ$ and $τ$ are the stretched coordinates in MST] which appears due to the wave-particle resonance. It is found that a subregion $1/3<q\lesssim3/5$ of superextensivity $(q<1)$ exists where the carrier wave frequency can turn over with the group velocity going to zero and then to negative values. The effects of the nonlocal nonlinear term and the nonextensive parameter $q$ are examined on the modulational instability (MI) of wave envelopes as well as on the solitary wave solution of the NLS equation. It is found that the modulated wave packet is always unstable (nonlinear Landau damping) due to the nonlocal nonlinearity in the NLS equation. Furthermore, the effect of the nonlinear Landau damping is to slow down the amplitude of the wave envelope, and the corresponding decay rate can be faster the larger is the number of superthermal particles in pair plasmas.

However, the envelope can be unstable at an intermediate scale of perturbations with $0<k<1$. Thus, the modulated IAW packets can propagate in the form of bright envelope solitons or rogons (at small- and medium scale perturbations) as well as dark envelope solitons (at large scale). The stable and unstable regions are obtained for different values of temperature and density ratios as well as the nonextensive parameters $q_c$ and $q_h$ for cool and hot electrons. It is found that the more (less) the population of superthermal cool (hot) electrons, the smaller is the growth rate of instability with cutoffs at smaller wave numbers of modulation.

The effects of linear Landau damping on the nonlinear propagation of dust-acoustic solitary waves (DASWs) are studied in a collisionless unmagnetized dusty plasma with two species of positive ions. The extremely massive, micron-seized, cold and negatively charged dust particles are described by fluid equations, whereas the two species of positive ions, namely the cold (heavy) and hot (light) ions are described by the kinetic Vlasov equations. Following Ott and Sudan [Phys. Fluids {\bf 12}, 2388 (1969)], and by considering lower and higher-order perturbations, the evolution of DASWs with Landau damping is shown to be governed by Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), modified KdV (mKdV) or Gardner (KdV-mKdV)-like equations. The properties of the phase velocity and the Landau damping rate of DASWs are studied for different values of the ratios of the temperatures $(σ)$ and the number densities $(μ)$ of hot and cold ions as well the cold to hot ion mass ratio $m$. The distinctive features of the decay rates of the amplitudes of the KdV, mKdV and Gardner solitons with a small effect of Landau damping are also studied in different parameter regimes. It is found that the Gardner soliton points to lower wave amplitudes than the KdV and mKdV solitons. The results may be useful for understanding the localization of solitary pulses and associated wave damping (collisionless) in laboratory and space plasmas (e.g., the F-ring of Saturn) in which the number density of free electrons is much smaller than that of ions and the heavy, micron seized dust grains are highly charged.

Starting from a set of hydrodynamic equations with the ion thermal pressures and ion kinematic viscosities included, and using a standard reductive perturbation method, the Kadomtsev-Petviashivili Burgers (KPB) equation is derived, which governs the evolution of DIA shocks. A stationary solution of the KPB equation is obtained and its properties are analysed with different plasma number densities, ion temperatures and masses. It is shown that a transition from shocks with negative potential to positive one occurs depending on the negative ion concentration in the plasma and the obliqueness of propagation of DIA waves.

The nonlinear theory of two-dimensional ion-acoustic (IA) solitary waves and shocks (SWS) is revisited in a dissipative quantum plasma. The effects of dispersion, caused by the charge separation of electrons and ions and the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential for degenerate electrons, as well as, the dissipation due to the ion kinematic viscosity are considered. Using the reductive perturbation technique, a Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Burgers (KPB)-type equation, which governs the evolution of small-amplitude SWS in quantum plasmas, is derived, and its different solutions are obtained and analyzed. It is shown that the KPB equation can admit either compressive or rarefactive SWS according to when $H\lessgtr2/3$, or the particle number density satisfies $n_0\gtrless 1.3\times10^{31}$ cm$^{-3}$, where $H$ is the ratio of the electron plasmon energy to the Fermi energy densities. Furthermore, the properties of large-amplitude stationary shocks are studied numerically in the case when the wave dispersion due to charge separation is negligible. It is also shown that a transition from monotonic to oscillatory shocks occurs by the effects of the quantum parameter $H$.

We investigate the propagation characteristics of electrostatic dust-acoustic (DA) solitary waves and shocks in a strongly coupled dusty plasma consisting of intertialess electrons and ions, and strongly coupled inertial charged dust particles. A generalized viscoelastic hydrodynamic model with the effects of electrostatic dust pressure associated with the strong coupling of dust particles, and a quantum hydrodynamic model with the effects of quantum forces associated with the Bohm potential and the exchange-correlation potential for electrons and ions are considered. Both the linear and weakly nonlinear theory of DA waves are studied by the derivation and analysis of dispersion relations as well as Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and KdV-Burgers (KdVB)-like equations. It is shown that in the kinetic regime ($ωτ_m\gg1$, where $ω$ is the wave frequency and $τ_m$ is the viscoelastic relaxtation time), the amplitude of the DA solitary waves decays slowly with time with the effect of a small amount of dust viscosity. However, the DA shock-like perturbations can be excited in the hydrodynamic regime with $ωτ_m\ll1$. The analytical and numerical solutions of the KdV and KdVB equations are also presented and analyzed with the system parameters.

The cold massive charged dusts are described by fluid equations, whereas the two-species of ions (positive and negative) are described by the kinetic Vlasov equations. A Korteweg de-Vries (KdV) equation with Landau damping, governing the dynamics of weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive DAWs, is derived following Ott and Sudan [Phys. Fluids {\bf 12}, 2388 (1969)]. It is shown that for some typical laboratory and space plasmas, the Landau damping (and the nonlinear) effects are more pronounced than the finite Debye length (dispersive) effects for which the KdV soliton theory is not applicable to DAWs in dusty pair-ion plasmas. The properties of the linear phase velocity, solitary wave amplitudes (in presence and absence of the Landau damping) as well as the Landau damping rate are studied with the effects of the positive ion to dust density ratio $(μ_{pd})$ as well as the ratios of positive to negative ion temperatures $(σ)$ and masses $(m)$.

We study the amplitude modulation of low-frequency, long-wavelength electrostatic drift-wave envelopes in a nonuniform quantum magnetoplasma consisting of cold ions and degenerate electrons. The effects of tunneling associated with the quantum Bohm potential and the Fermi pressure for nonrelativistic degenerate electrons, as well as the equilibrium density and magnetic field inhomogeneities are taken into account. Starting from a set of quantum magnetohydrodynamic (QMHD) equations, we derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) that governs the dynamics of the modulated quantum drift-wave packets. The NLSE is used to study the modulational instability (MI) of a Stoke's wave train to a small plane wave perturbation. It is shown that the quantum tunneling effect as well as the scale length of inhomogeneity play crucial roles for the MI of the drift-wave packets. Thus, the latter can propagate in the form of bright and dark envelope solitons or as drift-wave rogons in degenerate dense magnetoplasmas.

The nonlinear propagation of electrostatic dust-acoustic (DA) waves in a magnetized dusty plasma consisting of negatively charged mobile dusts, nonthermal fast electrons and trapped ions with vortex-like distribution is studied. Using the reductive perturbation technique, a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)-like equation is derived which governs the dynamics of the small-amplitude solitary waves in a magnetized dusty nonthermal plasma. It is found that due to the dust thermal pressure, there exists a critical value $(β_c)$ of the nothermal parameter $β~(>1)$, denoting the percentage of energetic electrons, below which the DA solitary waves cease to propagate. The soliton solution (travelling wave) of the KdV-like equation is obtained, and is shown to be only of the rarefactive type. The properties of the solitons are analyzed numerically with the system parameters. It is also seen that the effect of the static magnetic field (which only modifies the soliton width) becomes significant when the dust gyrofrequency is smaller than one-tenth of the dust plasma frequency. Furthermore, the amplitude of the soliton is found to increase (decrease) when the ratio of the free to trapped ion temperatures $(σ)$ is positive (negative). The effects of the system parameters including the obliqueness of propagation $(l_z)$ and $σ$ on the dynamics of the DA solitons are also discussed numerically, and it is found that the soliton structures can withstand perturbations and turbulence during a considerable time. The results should be useful for understanding the nonlinear propagation of DA solitary waves in laboratory and space plasmas (e.g., Earth's magnetosphere, auroral region, heliospheric environments etc.).

We investigate the propagation characteristics of electrostatic waves in a magnetized pair-ion plasma with immobile charged dusts. It is shown that obliquely propagating (OP) low-frequency (in comparison with the negative-ion cyclotron frequency) long-wavelength "slow" and "fast" modes can propagate, respectively, as dust ion-acoustic (DIA) and dust ion-cyclotron (DIC)-like waves. The properties of these modes are studied with the effects of obliqueness of propagation $(θ)$, the static magnetic field, the ratios of the negative to positive ion masses $(m)$ and temperatures $(T)$ as well as the dust to negative-ion number density ratio $(δ)$. Using the standard reductive perturbation technique, we derive a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation which governs the evolution of small-amplitude OP DIA waves. It is found that the KdV equation admits only rarefactive solitons in plasmas with $m$ well below its critical value $m_c~(\gg1)$ which typically depends on $T$ and $δ$. It is shown that the nonlinear coefficient of the KdV equation vanishes at $m=m_c$, i.e., for plasmas with much heavier negative ions, and the evolution of the DIA waves is then described by a modified KdV (mKdV) equation. The latter is shown to have only compressive soliton solution. The properties of both the KdV and mKdV solitons are studied with the system parameters as above, and possible applications of our results to laboratory and space plasmas are briefly discussed.

The propagation of electrostatic waves in an unmagnetized collisionless pair-ion plasma with immobile positively charged dusts is studied for both large- and small-amplitude perturbations. Using a two-fluid model for pair-ions, it is shown that there appear two linear ion modes, namely the "fast" and "slow" waves in dusty pair-ion plasmas. The properties of these wave modes are studied with different mass $(m)$ and temperature $(T)$ ratios of negative to positive ions, as well as the effects of immobile charged dusts $(δ)$. For large-amplitude waves, the pseudopotential approach is performed, whereas the standard reductive perturbation technique (RPT) is used to study the small-amplitude Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) solitons. The profiles of the pseudopotential, the large amplitude solitons as well as the dynamical evolution of KdV solitons are numerically studied with the system parameters as above. It is found that the pair-ion plasmas with positively charged dusts support the propagation of solitary waves (SWs) with only the negative potential. The results may be useful for the excitation of SWs in laboratory dusty pair-ion plasmas, electron-free industrial plasmas as well as for observation in space plasmas where electron density is negligibly small compared to that of negative ions.

The generation of Rossby rogue waves (Rossby rogons), as well as the excitation of bright and dark Rossby envelpe solitons are demonstrated on the basis of the modulational instability (MI) of a coherent Rossby wave packet. The evolution of an amplitude modulated Rossby wave packet is governed by one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). The latter is used to study the amplitude modulation of Rossby wave packets for fluids in Earth's atmosphere and in the solar photosphere. It is found that an ampitude modulated Rossby wave packet becomes stable (unstable) against quasi-stationary, long wavelength (in comparision with the Rossby wave length) perturbations, when the carrier Rossby wave number satisfies $k^2 < 1/2$ or $\sqrt{2}+1<k^2<3$ ($k^2 >3$ or $1/2<k^2<\sqrt{2}+1$). It is also shown that a Rossby rogon or a bright Rossby envelope soliton may be excited in the shallow water approximation for the Rossby waves in solar photosphere. However, the excitation of small or large scale perturbations may be possible for magnetized plasmas in the ionosphereic $E-$layer.
