Abstract:
We probe the sensitivity of the singlet-triplet energy gap of selected azaphenalenes to symmetry lowering induced by Jahn-Teller interactions. While cyclazine in its characteristic $D_{\rm 3h}$ structure defies Hund's rule, CCSD(T)-level modeling suggests its structure corresponds to two equivalent minima of $C_{\rm 3h}$ symmetry undergoing rapid automerization. The combined effect of symmetry red…

The combined effect of symmetry reduction and high-level corrections indicates a negligible singlet-triplet gap in cyclazine. Notably, pentazine and heptazine prefer symmetric structures exhibiting negative gaps in accord with experiments. Azaphenalenes containing nitrogen atoms at electron-deficient sites exhibit stronger in-plane structural distortion; in their low-symmetry energy minima, they adhere to Hund's rule.

Inspired by a recent experimental and theoretical study [Yang et al., 2017], wherein protrusions in graphene have been proposed as an effective strategy to enhance the performance of sodium ion batteries, a comprehensive study of the effects of phosphorus doping in graphene on adsorption and diffusion behaviour of Li is carried out by using density functional theory. We find that protrusion introduced by P-dopant in graphene enhances the adsorption of a single Li atom onto the anode due to an additional partial covalent bonding character between Li and carbon atoms of the substrate. However, with increase in concentration of Li atoms, they tend to form clusters which may lead to dendrite growth and hence battery failure. Finite density of states at Fermi level ensures the electronic conductivity of the P-doped graphene before and after the adsorption of a Li atom. No momentous variation in DOS is observed except a small up shift in Fermi level with increased Li concentration. The presence of such protrusions acts as trapping centres for Li and hinders their migration over the substrate, leading to poor cycling performance of anode. This atomic level study will act as a useful guideline for further development of anode materials for novel battery technologies.

This work presents a simple and realistic approach to handle the available data of COVID-19 patients in India and to forecast the scenario. The model proposed is based on the available facts like the onset of lockdown (as announced by the Government on 25th day, τ0 and the recovery pattern dictated by a mean life recovery time of τ1 ( normally said to be around 14 days). The data of infected COVID-19 patients from March 2, to April 16, 2020 has been used to fit the evolution of infected, recovery and death counts. A slow rising exponential growth, with R0 close to 1/6, is found to represent the infected counts indicating almost a linear rise. The rest of growth, saturation and decay of data is comprehensibly modelled by incorporating lockdown time controlled R0, having a normal error function like behaviour decaying to zero in some time frame of τ2 . The recovery mean life time τ1 dictates the peak and decay. The results predicted for coming days are interesting and optimistic. The introduced time constants based on experimental data for both the recovery rate as well as for determining the time span of activity of R0 after the lockdown are subject of debate and provide possibility to introduce trigger factors to alter these to be more suited to the model. The model can be extended to other communities with their own R0 and recovery time parameters.
