This paper presents a study of the global medium-scale (scales<620 km) gravity wave (GW) activity (in terms of zonal wind variance) and its seasonal, local time and longitudinal variations by employing the enhanced-resolution (~50 km) Whole Atmosphere Model (WAMT254) and space-based observations for geomagnetically quiet conditions. It is found that the GW hotspots produced by WAMT254 in the troposphere and stratosphere agree well with previously well-studied orographic and non-orographic sources. In the ionosphere-thermosphere (IT) region, GWs spread out forming latitudinal band-like hotspots. During solstices, a primary maximum in GW activity is observed in WAMT254 and GOCE over winter mid-high latitudes, likely associated with higher-order waves with primary sources in polar night jet, fronts and polar vortex. During all the seasons, the enhancement of GWs around the geomagnetic poles as observed by GOCE (at ~250 km) is well captured by simulations. WAMT254 GWs in the IT region also show dependence on local time due to their interaction with migrating tides leading to diurnal and semidiurnal variations. The GWs are more likely to propagate up from the MLT region during westward/weakly-eastward phase of thermospheric tides, signifying the dominance of eastward GW momentum flux in the MLT. Additionally, as a novel finding, a wavenumber-4 signature in GW activity is predicted by WAMT254 between 6-12 LT in the tropics at ~250 km, which propagates eastward with local time. This behavior is likely associated with the modulation of GWs by wave-4 signal of non-migrating tides in the lower thermospheric zonal winds.

Chinese people are talking about a national birth rate of 6.4 per 1,000 people in 2023, the lowest in the world. Whether this is related to the wrong use of various artificial night light rays passing through our eyes is worth reflection. Non-visual effects of light are the effects of the blue component of light, which effectively inhibits the melatonin secretion in the pineal gland. As melatonin acts through high-affinity receptors located centrally and in all organs, blue light affects, in principle, the hormone secretion throughout the body, including the secretion of sex hormones and cortisol. These effects have been widely used in animal reproduction. Given that the night light environment has significantly changed over the past century, an effect of light on fertility and behavior could be detected in multiple cases. We showed that the ovulation phase of hens could be shifted by the light as low as 0.2 Lx, which corresponds to the illumination intensity at full moon, and the effect of 0.2 Lx on ovulation is normally far greater than all other factors combined. Two rounds of experiments and many other facts listed support that human intrinsic fertility may have not declined significantly, and food, chemical pollution and policy making are all not the main factors affecting fertility. The longer lighting time at night has brought modern humans into a radically different endocrine state compared with that of humans who lived 100 years ago, which has a huge impact on human reproduction, values and even the progress of civilization. With the development of the digital era, our eyes will be exposed to even longer light time at night. How to restore human beings to a normal hormonal state by combating the misuse of light may be the urgent issue. The light of the digital world (met averse, AI, and so on)may be should not continue to flood.

2D MoS2 attracts increasing attention for its application in flexible electronics and photonic devices. For 2D material optoelectronic devices, light absorption of the molecularly thin 2D absorber would be one of the key limiting factors in device efficiency, and conventional photon management techniques are not necessarily compatible with them. In this paper, we show two semimetal composite nanostructures for synergistic photon management and strain-induced band gap engineering of 2D MoS2: (1) pseudo-periodic Sn nanodots, (2) conductive SnOx (x<1) core-shell nanoneedle structures. Without sophisticated nanolithography, both nanostructures are self-assembled from physical vapor deposition. 2D MoS2 achieves up to >15x enhancement in absorption at λ=650-950 nm under Sn nanodots, and 20-30x at λ=700-900 nm under SnOx (x<1) nanoneedles, both spanning from visible to near infrared regime. Enhanced absorption in MoS2 results from strong near field enhancement and reduced MoS2 band gap due to the tensile strain induced by the Sn nanostructures, as confirmed by Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Especially, we demonstrate that up to 3.5% biaxial tensile strain is introduced to 2D MoS2 using conductive nanoneedle-structured SnOx (x<1), which reduces the band gap by ~0.35 eV to further enhance light absorption at longer wavelengths. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a synergistic triple-functional photon management, stressor, and conductive electrode layer on 2D MoS2. Such synergistic photon management and band gap engineering approach for extended spectral response can be further applied to other 2D materials for future 2D photonic devices.

During the era of global warming and highly urbanized development, extreme and high impact weather as well as air pollution incidents influence everyday life and might even cause the incalculable loss of life and property. Although with the vast development of numerical simulation of atmosphere, there still exists substantial forecast biases objectively. To predict extreme weather, severe air pollution, and abrupt climate change accurately, the numerical atmospheric model requires not only to simulate meteorology and atmospheric compositions and their impacts simultaneously involving many sophisticated physical and chemical processes but also at high spatiotemporal resolution. Global atmospheric simulation of meteorology and atmospheric compositions simultaneously at spatial resolutions of a few kilometers remains challenging due to its intensive computational and input/output (I/O) requirement. Through multi-dimension-parallelism structuring, aggressive and finer-grained optimizing, manual vectorizing, and parallelized I/O fragmenting, an integrated Atmospheric Model Across Scales (iAMAS) was established on the new Sunway supercomputer platform to significantly increase the computational efficiency and reduce the I/O cost. The global 3-km atmospheric simulation for meteorology with online integrated aerosol feedbacks with iAMAS was scaled to 39,000,000 processor cores and achieved the speed of 0.82 simulation day per hour (SDPH) with routine I/O, which enables us to perform 5-day global weather forecast at 3-km horizontal resolution with online natural aerosol impacts. The results demonstrate the promising future that the increasing of spatial resolution to a few kilometers with online integrated aerosol impacts may significantly improve the global weather forecast.

Molecule-surface interaction is key to many physical and chemical processes at interfaces. Here, we show that the dynamics of single molecules on a surface under ultrahigh vacuum can be resolved using fluorescence imaging. By adapting oil-immersion microscopy to a thin vacuum window, we measure the surface adsorption, translational and rotational diffusion of single perylene molecules on a fused silica surface with high spatial and temporal resolutions. Time-dependent measurements of the fluorescence signal allow us to deduce two characteristic decay time scales, which can be explained through a simplified model involving two adsorption states and five energy levels. The system presented in this work combines fluorescence imaging with essential ingredients for surface science and promises a platform for probing single molecule-surface interactions in highly defined conditions.
