Lato-lato, a pendulum-based toy gaining popularity in Indonesian playgrounds, has sparked interest with competitions centered around maintaining its oscillatory motion. While some find it easy to play, the challenge lies in sustaining the oscillation, particularly in maintaining both "up and down collisions." Through a Newtonian dynamics numerical analysis using Python (code by ChatGPT), this study identifies two equilibrium phases - phase 1, characterized by normal pendulum motion, and phase 2, the double collision mode - by using the driven oscillation model. In addition, further analysis and discussion are done using the obtained numeric data. The difficulty in remaining in phase 2 highlights the intricate hand-eye coordination required, shedding light on the toy's appeal and the skill it demands.

Abstract:
We present a density functional theory study of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on a single atom catalyst embedded in graphene, namely, TM-N$_{4}$-C (TM = Fe and Co), using the effective screening medium method combined with the reference interaction site model (ESM-RISM). It was found that Fe-N$_{4}$-C and Co-N$_{4}$-C show comparable ORR activities from the constant electrode potential simul…

We present a density functional theory study of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on a single atom catalyst embedded in graphene, namely, TM-N$_{4}$-C (TM = Fe and Co), using the effective screening medium method combined with the reference interaction site model (ESM-RISM). It was found that Fe-N$_{4}$-C and Co-N$_{4}$-C show comparable ORR activities from the constant electrode potential simulations, in contrast to the results obtained using the constant (neutral) charge simulation, in which the superior performance of Co-N$_{4}$-C has been predicted. The constant potential method allows the variable charge and thus results in a potential dependence of the reaction-free energies different from that with the constant charge method in which the potential dependence is included as an ad hoc manner. We suggest the importance of the variable charge in the simulation of the electrochemical reaction, which is enabled by ESM-RISM.

A comprehensive analysis of plasma and composition characteristics inside magnetic clouds (MCs) observed by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft from 1998 February to 2011 August is presented. The results show that MCs have specific interior structures, and MCs of different speeds show differences in composition and structure. Compared with the slow MCs, fast MCs have enhanced mean charge states of iron, oxygen, silicon, magnesium, $\mathrm{O^{7+}/O^{6+}}$, $\mathrm{C^{6+}/C^{5+}}$, $\mathrm{C^{6+}/C^{4+}}$ and $\mathrm{Fe^{\geq16+}/Fe_{total}}$ values. For ionic species in fast MCs, a higher atomic number represents a greater enhancement of mean charge state than slow MCs. We also find that both the fast and slow MCs display bimodal structure distribution in the mean iron charge state ($\mathrm{\langle Q\rangle Fe}$), which suggests that the existence of flux rope prior to the eruption is common. Furthermore, the $\mathrm{\langle Q\rangle Fe} $, $\mathrm{Fe^{\geq16+}/Fe_{total}}$, and $\mathrm{O^{7+}/O^{6+}}$ ratio distribution inside fast MCs have the feature that the posterior peak is higher than the anterior one. This result agrees with the "standard model" for CME/flares, by which magnetic reconnection occurs beneath the flux rope, thereby ionizing the ions of the posterior part of flux rope sufficiently by high-energy electron collisions or by direct heating in the reconnection region.

Hazardous tsunamis are known to be generated predominantly at subduction zones. However, the 2018 Mw 7.5 Sulawesi (Indonesia) earthquake on a strike-slip fault generated a tsunami that devastated the city of Palu. The mechanism by which this tsunami originated from such an earthquake has been debated. Here we present near-field ground motion (GPS) data confirming that the earthquake attained supershear speed, i.e., a rupture speed greater than the shear wave speed of the host medium. We study the effect of this supershear rupture on tsunami generation by coupling the ground motion to a one-dimensional nonlinear shallow-water wave model accounting for both time-dependent bathymetric displacement and velocity. With the local bathymetric profile of Palu bay around a tidal station, our simulations reproduce the tsunami arrival and motions observed by CCTV cameras. We conclude that Mach (shock) fronts, generated by the supershear speed, interacted with the bathymetry and contributed to the tsunami.
