Uncertainty in medical image segmentation tasks, especially inter-rater variability, arising from differences in interpretations and annotations by various experts, presents a significant challenge in achieving consistent and reliable image segmentation. This variability not only reflects the inherent complexity and subjective nature of medical image interpretation but also directly impacts the development and evaluation of automated segmentation algorithms. Accurately modeling and quantifying this variability is essential for enhancing the robustness and clinical applicability of these algorithms. We report the set-up and summarize the benchmark results of the Quantification of Uncertainties in Biomedical Image Quantification Challenge (QUBIQ), which was organized in conjunction with International Conferences on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) 2020 and 2021. The challenge focuses on the uncertainty quantification of medical image segmentation which considers the omnipresence of inter-rater variability in imaging datasets. The large collection of images with multi-rater annotations features various modalities such as MRI and CT; various organs such as the brain, prostate, kidney, and pancreas; and different image dimensions 2D-vs-3D. A total of 24 teams submitted different solutions to the problem, combining various baseline models, Bayesian neural networks, and ensemble model techniques. The obtained results indicate the importance of the ensemble models, as well as the need for further research to develop efficient 3D methods for uncertainty quantification methods in 3D segmentation tasks.

This paper proposes a node flux-linkage synchronizing control method (NFSCM) for power systems with 100% wind power generation based on a capacitor voltage balancing scheme (CVBS). Different from the conventional grid-forming controllers, NFSCM is designed to regulate inverters as virtual flux-linkage sources. Auto-synchronization of flux-linkage vectors is achieved through the CVBS-based NFSCM. The mismatch among the angular frequencies of flux-linkage vectors is eliminated by regulating the tracking errors of DC-link voltages, which establishes a negative feedback between the output frequency and active power of the inverter. NFSCM is adaptive to weak and strong grids. It avoids the excitation inrush currents in the step-up transformer of wind power generators. It also eliminates the DC components of the three-phase currents, and avoids low-frequency oscillations in active power. In order to limit the short-circuit current of inverters, a logic-based bang-bang funnel control (LBFC) is designed to control the switches of inverter bridges when over-current is detected. LBFC is able to restrict various fault currents within an acceptable range within the shortest time. LBFC and NFSCM are designed to operate in a switched manner according to a state-dependent switching strategy. Time-domain simulations were conducted on a 100% wind power generation test system, and the performance of NFSCM and LBFC were investigated.

In today's era, users have increasingly high expectations regarding the performance and efficiency of communication networks. Network operators aspire to achieve efficient network planning, operation, and optimization through Digital Twin Networks (DTN). The effectiveness of DTN heavily relies on the network model, with graph neural networks (GNN) playing a crucial role in network modeling. However, existing network modeling methods still lack a comprehensive understanding of communication networks. In this paper, we propose DWNet (Deeper and Wider Networks), a heterogeneous graph neural network modeling method based on data-driven approaches that aims to address end-to-end latency and jitter prediction in network models. This method stands out due to two distinctive features: firstly, it introduces deeper levels of state participation in the message passing process; secondly, it extensively integrates relevant features during the feature fusion process. Through experimental validation and evaluation, our model achieves higher prediction accuracy compared to previous research achievements, particularly when dealing with unseen network topologies during model training. Our model not only provides more accurate predictions but also demonstrates stronger generalization capabilities across diverse topological structures.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology that has the potential to change the way we interact with the wireless propagating environment. In this paper, we design and fabricate an RIS system that can be used in the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication networks. We also propose a practical two-step spatial-oversampling codebook algorithm for the beamforming of RIS, which is based on the spatial structure of the wireless channel. This algorithm has much lower complexity compared to the two-dimensional full-space searching-based codebook, yet with only negligible performance loss. Then, a series of experiments are conducted with the fabricated RIS systems, covering the office, corridor, and outdoor environments, in order to verified the effectiveness of RIS in both laboratory and current 5G commercial networks. In the office and corridor scenarios, the 5.8 GHz RIS provided a 10-20 dB power gain at the receiver. In the outdoor test, over 35 dB power gain was observed with RIS compared to the non-deployment case. However, in commercial 5G networks, the 2.6 GHz RIS improved indoor signal strength by only 4-7 dB. The experimental results indicate that RIS achieves higher power gain when transceivers are equipped with directional antennas instead of omni-directional antennas.

Most research works on reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) rely on idealized models of the reflection coefficients, i.e., uniform reflection amplitude for any phase and sufficient phase shifting capability. In practice however, such models are oversimplified. This paper introduces a realistic reflection coefficient model for RIS based on measurements. The reflection coefficients are modeled as discrete complex values that have non-uniform amplitudes and suffer from insufficient phase shift capability. We then propose a group-based query algorithm that takes the imperfect coefficients into consideration while calculating the reflection coefficients. We analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm, and derive the closed-form expressions to characterize the received power of an RIS-aided wireless communication system. The performance gains of the proposed algorithm are confirmed in simulations. Furthermore, we validate the proposed theoretical results by experiments with our fabricated RIS prototype systems. The simulation and measurement results match well with the theoretical analysis.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) has recently been regarded as a paradigm-shifting technology beyond 5G, for its flexibility on smartly adjusting the response to the impinging electromagnetic (EM) waves. Usually, RIS can be implemented by properly reconfiguring the adjustable parameters of each RIS unit to align the signal phase on the receiver side. And it is believed that the phase alignment can be also mechanically achieved by a metal plate with the same physical size. However, we found in the prototype experiments that, a well-rotated metal plate can only approximately perform as well as RIS under limited conditions, although its scattering efficiency is relatively higher. When it comes to the case of spherical wave impinging, RIS outperforms the metal plate even beyond the receiving near-field regions. We analyze this phenomenon with wave optics theory and propose explicit scattering models for both the metal plate and RIS in general scenarios. Finally, the models are validated by simulations and field measurements.

To cope with the explosive traffic growth of next-generation wireless communications, it is necessary to design next-generation multiple access techniques that can provide higher spectral efficiency as well as larger-scale connectivity. As a promising candidate, power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been widely studied. In conventional power-domain NOMA, multiple users are multiplexed in the same time and frequency band by different preset power levels, which, however, may limit the spectral efficiency under practical finite alphabet inputs. Inspired by the concept of spatial modulation, we propose to solve this problem by encoding extra information bits into the power levels, and exploit different signal constellations to help the receiver distinguish between them. To convey this idea, termed power selection (PS)-NOMA, clearly, we consider a simple downlink two-user NOMA system with finite input constellations. Assuming maximum-likelihood detection, we derive closed-form approximate bit error ratio (BER) expressions for both users. The achievable rates of both users are also derived in closed form. Simulation results verify the analysis and show that the proposed PS-NOMA outperforms conventional NOMA in terms of BER and achievable rate.

The idea of using a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) consisting of a large array of passive scattering elements to assist wireless communication systems has recently attracted much attention from academia and industry. A central issue with RIS is how much power they can effectively convey to the target radio nodes. Regarding this question, several power level models exist in the literature but few have been validated through experiments. In this paper, we propose a radar cross section-based received power model for an RIS-aided wireless communication system that is rooted in the physical properties of RIS. Our proposed model follows the intuition that the received power is related to the distances from the transmitter/receiver to the RIS, the angles in the TX-RIS-RX triangle, the effective area of each element, and the reflection coefficient of each element. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to model the angle-dependent phase shift of the reflection coefficient, which is typically ignored in existing literature. We further measure the received power with our experimental platform in different scenarios to validate our model. The measurement results show that our model is appropriate both in near field and far field and can characterize the impact of angles well.

The prospects of using a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) to aid wireless communication systems have recently received much attention from academia and industry. Most papers make theoretical studies based on elementary models, while the prototyping of RIS-aided wireless communication and real-world field trials are scarce. In this paper, we describe a new RIS prototype consisting of 1100 controllable elements working at 5.8 GHz band. We propose an efficient algorithm for configuring the RIS over the air by exploiting the geometrical array properties and a practical receiver-RIS feedback link. In our indoor test, where the transmitter and receiver are separated by a 30 cm thick concrete wall, our RIS prototype provides a 26 dB power gain compared to the baseline case where the RIS is replaced by a copper plate. A 27 dB power gain was observed in the short-distance outdoor measurement. We also carried out long-distance measurements and successfully transmitted a 32 Mbps data stream over 500 m. A 1080p video was live-streamed and it only played smoothly when the RIS was utilized. The power consumption of the RIS is around 1 W. Our paper is vivid proof that the RIS is a very promising technology for future wireless communications.

Earth observation resources are becoming increasingly indispensable in disaster relief, damage assessment and related domains. Many unpredicted factors, such as the change of observation task requirements, to the occurring of bad weather and resource failures, may cause the scheduled observation scheme to become infeasible. Therefore, it is crucial to be able to promptly and maybe frequently develop high-quality replanned observation schemes that minimize the effects on the scheduled tasks. A bottom-up distributed coordinated framework together with an improved contract net are proposed to facilitate the dynamic task replanning for heterogeneous Earth observation resources. This hierarchical framework consists of three levels, namely, neighboring resource coordination, single planning center coordination, and multiple planning center coordination. Observation tasks affected by unpredicted factors are assigned and treated along with a bottom-up route from resources to planning centers. This bottom-up distributed coordinated framework transfers part of the computing load to various nodes of the observation systems to allocate tasks more efficiently and robustly. To support the prompt assignment of large-scale tasks to proper Earth observation resources in dynamic environments, we propose a multiround combinatorial allocation (MCA) method. Moreover, a new float interval-based local search algorithm is proposed to obtain the promising planning scheme more quickly. The experiments demonstrate that the MCA method can achieve a better task completion rate for large-scale tasks with satisfactory time efficiency. It also demonstrates that this method can help to efficiently obtain replanning schemes based on original scheme in dynamic environments.

The clinical treatment of degenerative and developmental lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is different. Computed tomography (CT) is helpful in distinguishing degenerative and developmental LSS due to its advantage in imaging of osseous and calcified tissues. However, boundaries of the vertebral body, spinal canal and dural sac have low contrast and hard to identify in a CT image, so the diagnosis depends heavily on the knowledge of expert surgeons and radiologists. In this paper, we develop an automatic lumbar spinal CT image segmentation method to assist LSS diagnosis. The main contributions of this paper are the following: 1) a new lumbar spinal CT image dataset is constructed that contains 2393 axial CT images collected from 279 patients, with the ground truth of pixel-level segmentation labels; 2) a dual densely connected U-shaped neural network (DDU-Net) is used to segment the spinal canal, dural sac and vertebral body in an end-to-end manner; 3) DDU-Net is capable of segmenting tissues with large scale-variant, inconspicuous edges (e.g., spinal canal) and extremely small size (e.g., dural sac); and 4) DDU-Net is practical, requiring no image preprocessing such as contrast enhancement, registration and denoising, and the running time reaches 12 FPS. In the experiment, we achieve state-of-the-art performance on the lumbar spinal image segmentation task. We expect that the technique will increase both radiology workflow efficiency and the perceived value of radiology reports for referring clinicians and patients.

With the recent advancement in environmental sensing, vehicle control and vehicle-infrastructure cooperation technologies, more and more autonomous driving companies start to put their intelligent cars into road test. But in the near future, we will face a heterogeneous traffic with both intelligent connected vehicles and human vehicles. In this paper, we investigated the impacts of four collision avoidance algorithms under different intelligent connected vehicles market penetration rate. A customized simulation platform is built, in which a platoon can be initiated with many key parameters. For every short time interval, the dynamics of vehicles are updated and input in a kinematics model. If a collision occurs, the energy loss is calculated to represent the crash severity. Four collision avoidance algorithms are chosen and compared in terms of the crash rate and severity at different market penetration rate and different locations of the platoon. The results generate interesting debates on the issues of heterogeneous platoon safety.
